Chapter 5

"Yes, right away, Dr. Snyder!"

An hour later, the boat pulled up on the dock. Luke was rushed away to the Emergency Room, and I was left with Jenny, to explain what was happening. "Luke-"

"His name is Loo."

"Okay, then, well, Loo was bitten by a poisonous snake and he-"

"SO WHY DIDN'T WE HAVE SNAKE MEDICINE?"

"Let me finish. We didn't anticipate there being poisonous snakes on the island. We thought we only let non-lethal snakes onto the island, and that if we did accidentally let in a poisonous snake, it would be fine, because of the number of people. Luk- I mean Loo is being taken to the Emergency Room, where they can save him. That was a very brave thing you did, coming here without really saying goodbye. You saved him. You may not have known what you were doing when you stayed, but you definitely did when you left. The reason the snakes got mad is very scientific. It has to do with there being so many people on the island. 9 was the highest number we could get without the snakes being hostile, and they grew up with you. But when Loo arrived, the wild child that he is, and you didn't leave, well... But then you saved him and he is going to be okay. Maybe a little scar on his ankle, but nothing terrible." I saw that she was still looking miserable, so I hugged her and whispered, "You saved him, and everyone else. Your friends will be fine."

"I still have one question."

"Yes, what is it?"

"Can we stop doing this, whatever it is? It was really hard to leave."

"We can send you back a bigger boat so you can bring them here, if that's what you want."

She was extremely excited about this, and asked me about halloween. I explained what halloween was, and then I asked if she wanted to see everyone who had left before her. She yelled, "Yes, of course!" and we walked off to see them.

I didn't see all the people behind me watching me interact with Jenny, and I didn't realize that they had been standing there the whole time.
