[NOTE: If you see any crossed out parts, that's my bad, and editing as I wrote for NANOWRIMO. I still wanted to count those words that I ended up not needed.]

10: Wards

I sat down in the middle of the circle, crosslegged, though I pulled my skirt over my knees. Jupiter did the same but outside of the circle, facing me.

"As a deceiver, you are more specialized with wards and illusions, along with some charms. I do not know much about wards, but I do know some charms. The first one I'll teach you is to manifest and return the object. You see, when you manifest an object, like you did with me, you take something that already exists and bring it to where you want it. Often times that is in your hands, though if you were to manifest a tree, it would crush you, so I'd recommend manifesting away from you. Do you understand?"

I nodded my head. Manifesting and returning objects. It made a lot of sense to start there, since I'd already done that twice—well, the manifesting part.

"You wanted something badly enough to get it manifested to you, however even minors can do that parlor trick. A real Witch or Witchling doesn't have to want something badly enough. What we do is act like we already have it."

"Act like you have it already?" I repeated, but made it a question.

Jupiter waved her hand and a pallet of paints appeared in her hand, "When you act like you already have what you want to manifest, it appears seamlessly with what your body may be doing. For example, I waved my empty hand, but expected to get my paints. Because of this, when my paints came to me, there was a place for the paints to go seamlessly with my body."

"So I could run and manifest something."

"You can do whatever you want and manifest something as long as you do it the right way."

It took me a moment to think about when I accidentally manifested the food. It was on the ground, making Seraph reach for it before I could take it.

"So things don't just appear?" I asked.

Jupiter gave me a stern look with her one eye narrowing, "What if you want to manifest something on a table? Or on a person? You can manifest things wherever you want them to be, whenever you want them."

"So right now, I can manifest a cinnamon roll?" I asked.

"Try it."

I copied Jupiter's hand motion, totally expecting to get a cinnamon roll, but nothing happened.

My mouth twisted into a confused frown as I stared at my empty palm. Then I tried it again. And again.

Jupiter just watched my effort as I tried again and again to get a cinnamon roll.

"Why didn't it work? I'm expecting it to."

"Because, while there are some creatures who have the magic of creating, Witches cannot create. What we do is we take what has already been Made and transport it to us. You cannot manifest a sweet roll because you do not know where to take it from."

"I can only manifest things that I know where they are?"

Jupiter nodded, and the paints in her hands left. She returned them.

"My paints are in my room on the side table that I put be my easel. I know exactly where they are when I manifest them. I don't have to know exactly what they look like, though it does help, and I don't have to know exactly where things are, but I knew that I had paints in my room. My magic went and got it for me."

I thought about Seraph's wooden toy that Ryken made for her. Then I expected it to appear in my hand.I focused on letting my magic scour the room for it, but it wasn't there so I tried the dining room floor. My magic felt Seraph's body and next to her was the toy. This time, I made no fluid hand motion, though my fingers curled around the toy that appeared in my hand.
