It's a small, quiet town with normal people, yet I can't shake the feeling that there's a presence following me everywhere I go. I also have the feeling that I've been near here before, although I don't remember when, because Indiana has never been on my list of touristy destinations. Apparently there was a huge new mall here that just opened up, but was destroyed. I walk the streets, and look around at the girls gossiping and the kids running around. There's some local small businesses, and I think to myself, you know, I've never really been to many small towns, I normally stay in the cities.
The sky is bright and I'm sure the sunsets and sunrises are amazing. I look down at what I'm wearing to make sure I'm appropriate and I am, not too flashy, not too plain, not too out of style, I'm just right. I'm wearing a tank top and high waisted pants with a flannel tied around my waist.
I look into a store and see it's pretty desolate, perfect for me to steal some stuff from. I blink inside quickly, noticing there's only one woman behind the counter. I appear near the drinks, and grab a quick soft drink, I go for a Coke, even though I don't like the new formula as much, and I blink back out at the front. I see the woman perk up a bit but she won't be able to comprehend what just happened.
She gets up from the counter and starts to walk towards the sodas so I blink back in and take some gum, slipping it into my pocket. Poor lady, probably not getting paid very much, just trying to do her job. She looks a little worse for the wear than normal store managers.
"Don't steal from the small companies, just the big ones." I hear Tom's voice echo in my head. I sigh, fish a couple of bills and a handful of change from my pocket, and drop it ungracefully on the register with a jingle. I quickly blink out of sight with my coke, and move along. I keep walking down the street, as I walk past a reporter interviewing people and I catch part of the conversation. "Do you know anything about the missing people?" Asks the reporter.
I continued down the street and sit on a bench, watching the flashy cars with teenagers pass by. I just sit and observe for a couple of hours, just killing time. I see a girl on a skateboard, she's pretty good, doing kicks and flips and such. I smile. You don't normally see many girl skateboarders. She looks like she's a young teenager. She's got red hair, and freckles and she has such a serious expression on her face. Cute kid.
I hear some birds coo and I turn to look at them before I hear a car honk as the girl from earlier's board slips out from under her. Time slows down as adrenaline pulses through my veins. The girl is falling right into oncoming traffic. I normally wouldn't want anything to do with this girl, but I can't let her die. I can't let her flame snuff out when I have the power to do something. I'm not entirely an asshole.
Quickly, in my mind I make an action plan. I'm not sure if this will work, it's been a while since I've blinked with someone else, but I blink to the girl. I put one hand on her and one on the board that conveniently ricocheted back towards us. Blinking strategically, I make the scene look like I just pulled her out of the way, by blinking to some different spots on the pavement instead of doing one quick blink.
Upon arrival, I quickly glance around at the surroundings and there's a bunch of people looking. However, I don't think anyone questioned my arrival too much because most of them from across the street look away after a few whispers. That's how you can tell you really mess up, when everyone is just staring for a long time.
"Stupid kid!" The driver yells slowly and then drives off with a rev of his engine. I stand up and face the girl.
She looks at me in shock, sitting flat on her ass and scuttles away from me, up to the back of a wall of the building next to the road. I put her skateboard down and she looks at me with tears in her eyes. She wipes them away with her hand and looks down at her leg. I look too and sigh with a big puff of air. She's got a big cut there, probably from colliding with the object that made her slip. Once she sees that she looks even more fearful and tearful. She's got a big black eye as well on the side of her face that was originally facing away from me.
