i woke up slowly.

as expected, nick was holding me close, making sure i wouldn't get scared in the middle of the night.

he knew my dad wasn't around throughout my life.

it scared me sometimes and gave me nightmares.

he didn't physically abuse me.

but mentally, he destroyed me.

brought me down to nothing.

he complained i was overweight at just ten years old.

he would tell me i wasn't worth being loved.

he threatened me sometimes.

he made sure i knew what was wrong with me almost every second of the day.

eventually i stopped crying about it.

at age fourteen, he picked up everything and left.

of course, i hadn't known he left considering i stayed with nick most nights.

he comforted me.

he made everything better.

the second i stepped through the front door, mother ran into my arms.

obviously, i was confused.

she hadn't noticed till i slowly wrapped my arms around her as well.

-- flashback

i stepped into the door.

mother got off the couch and ran into my arms.

i slowly picked my arms from my sides and wrapped mine around her as well.

she was never into being loved and showing love through physical touch, so this was obviously new and weird.

"your dad is gone. he just packed his things and left." she was crying.

"i'm sorry mother." i rubbed circles into her back.

"i mean, he didn't even say anything to me. he just," she took a deep breath, "he just got home from work, ran upstairs, and a few moments later, he was gone. just like that."

"would you like tea? i will make some so you can relax." i let go of the tight embrace.

"thank you, dear."

she sat down on the couch and i stepped into the kitchen, rubbing my temples.

"nick, wake up." i shook him slightly.

he groaned, "are you okay?"

"yeah, i'm gonna get water."

he nodded and rolled over, allowing me to get up.

i stood up and stepped out of our room quietly.

hoping no one was awake, i stepped onto the balcony i had seen earlier.

i used the railing to get onto the roof.

i crawled to the other side of where i had gotten up incase someone was looking for me.
