Kace Beckett and his friends drag me into the boy's bathroom to reenact torture methods that rival the ones from eighteen-century Europe. I'm at least half their size, and they pull me along like a poodle being dragged behind a mob of German Shepards.
"Iggy, run! Save yourself!" I cry, and I reach for him when they drag me into one of the stalls.
"No!" Iggy shouts as two of Kace's friends hold him back. "I'm not leaving you!"
I feel my heart expand three sizes at his declaration. If Kace hadn't been about to shove my head into a dirty toilet, then I would have professed my love to Igor on the spot.
"Can you smell that?" Kace sneers as his friends knock me down to my knees in front of the filth-encrusted toilet. "That's the sweet smell of satisfaction."
"I'm sure you're intimately familiar with it," I mutter.
Kace grabs me by the hair, "What was that you little asshole?" He snarls, and he shakes my head back and forth. "Don't you ever shut your fucking face?"
"Only when your dad's dick is in my mouth," I reply. "It makes it kind of hard to--"
Kace slams my head into the toilet paper holder and I scream when my skull is suddenly enveloped in a wave of agony. It feels like my brain wants to slide out of my ears.
"Darcy!" Iggy hollers, and he's fighting as hard as he can to break free from the heathens that have him in their grip. "You're going to kill him! He hasn't even done anything to you!"
"It doesn't matter if he's done nothing or not! Wilder's gone, Iggy. It's time for you to choose a side." Kace snarls at him, and he lowers my head into the toilet. "Join us or join your little shit friend in the toilet where he belongs."
The stench is unbearable. I didn't think it was possible for something to smell so awful, and I hold onto the sides of the seat to try to keep Kace from shoving my face into the water. "Igor, for the love of God. Leave." My voice is muffled. "I don't want you seeing me like this." I was usually more refined in his presence. I prided myself on keeping up with my appearance, as dark and gloomy as I was.
"Shut up!" Kace screams, and he plunges my face into the cold water.
There's a moment where I'm too shocked to do anything, and then I start kicking and screaming. I'm choking on the water and it's going up my nose and into my mouth, and all I want to do is depart from this trivial existence.
Kace pulls my head back out and I'm torn between gasping for air and vomiting out the toilet juice that I've just swallowed. Then he dunks me in again and it's even worse the second time because he pushes the flush button, and he's laughing and laughing like it's the funniest thing in the world.
I hear something down in that darkness. The muffled shouting fades away to nothingness and there's a steady murmur. A single word repeated over and over again like a mantra.
Was I dying?
Was this truly the end?
"Shinigami."
The toilet suddenly explodes and I'm ripped backward, the sound deafening as porcelain and plastic goes crashing into the ceiling along with a blast of water. I slam into Iggy as I fly backward and we land in a heap together on the floor.
"Oh God, I can't see! I'm blind!" Kace Beckett howls as he rolls around on the floor, two bloody meatballs now in place of his eyeballs. "My fucking eyes are gone!"
"Darcy..." Iggy breathes, and we both stare at Kace and his friends as they lay bleeding and battered on the floor. It's like a bomb had gone off in the stall. "What the hell did you do?" He whispers.
"I don't know..." I collapse against him, holding onto his shirt as tightly as I can. "It wasn't my fault. You have to believe me!"
Iggy grabs me and suddenly we're standing and he has me by the shoulders, shaking me. "Stop crying, Brown. We need to get out of here before the principal shows up, or else we're really screwed."
I nod meekly and he pulls me out of the bathroom by the hand, leaving the destruction behind us. But where I should feel guilty about blasting Kace Beckett's eyes out of his skull, there is a sick sense of pleasure, and I am like a content cat, licking the blood off its paws.
Iggy leads me down the hallway, his arm around my wet shoulders. But as we're slinking away, the principal and several security guards run past us and head for the bathroom. There was a strong chance that Kace would rat me out once they questioned him, but I was prepared to face my inevitable doom. I had no explanation for what happened, but I knew that I had been the reason behind it.
It was only a matter of time before everyone started asking questions.
