My voice is barely audible and no one hears me. All except one person.I turn to face the two blue eyes burning holes in the side of my head.
Bucky regards me with shock, his usually stoic features lit up with concern and anger. He doesn't say a word, yet his message is louder than any of the voices shouting around me.
Don't.
The super soldier shakes his head at me, brow furrowed and gaze pleading. He sits rigidly in his seat, hands clenched in his lap as his stare flicks to Mengele and back. He shakes his head again, more firmly this time in an effort to dissuade me from the decision that is apparently obvious on my features.
The two blue eyes pierce mine with such a deep ferocity, willing me to follow his command.
Swallowing, I turn away, steeling myself to disobey his direct order.
"I'll do it!" I shout, raising my voice above the cacophony of arguing Avengers.
All eyes are back on me.
All I want is for the ground to swallow me up, every instinct in my body telling me to cower back into my seat. Instead I raise my chin in defiance, amber gaze ablaze with determination.
"Nyx, we're not going to..."
"It's my decision. We need this information." I cut Steve off, regarding him with hard eyes. His brow pulls down, disbelief written across his frowning features.
"There are other ways we can get this information." Stark tries, shaking his head at me.
"Then why have we had no leads for the last three weeks?"
My response causes him to falter, the witty Tony Stark finally unable to find a counter argument.
"You have three questions and then you tell us everything we want to know." I spit, turning my attention back to Mengele, forcing my voice to remain hard and emotionless.
The scientist regards me with narrowed eyes, a repulsive smile lighting up his pinched features. His face is aglow with triumph and pride, the most emotion I've ever seen him convey.
I can't help but feel I've just given him more than I intended to.
The room remains silent as the man tilts his head to the side, gaze never leaving mine. Despite my crawling skin, I hold it steadily.
"Ok." He nods finally, tearing his eyes away to look at his guard. He holds his cuffed wrists up expectantly.
"Oh no, the cuffs say on. This shouldn't take long." Stark pipes up, giving both the scientist and the government agent a hard look.
Mengele shrugs at the man, sending him a sly smile before stepping up to the head of the table. I lean back instinctively in my seat despite the 10 metres between us.
"Well Onyx, it's been a while, hasn't it?" Maurice Mengele starts, tilting his head to the side.
I bristle at the name but contain it, desperate to get this over with as fast as possible.
