"Well, today looks like a beautiful day in New York City. Bright and sunny all day today, highs in the upper 80's." As I search for the snooze button, I realize what day it is. June 4. OH MY GOD. Today's the day! Today's the day I start at the precinct! On top of it, today's my twenty-first birthday! I have never been so excited for anything in my life!
"Bye, honey. Please, do be careful. I love you, what time are you coming home?" "Don't worry, mom, I'll be safe. I should be back around seven. I'll see you later." "Okay. Oh, hey Jess?" "Yeah?" "Happy Birthday."
On my way to the precinct, with the windows down and the radio blasting, I can't help wondering if anyone else my age will be interning there. I wonder if there's going to be any hot guys. Fingers crossed! As I pull up to the lot, the guy asks for my name and badge number. "Umm, my name is Jessi Marcus. I'm here for a summer internship job." "Oh, Jessi, yes Captain Gates is expecting you. Park anywhere, come back here, and I'll take you in." "Thanks!" I say, as I'm let through. He said, "Captain Gates is expecting you." A Captain?! Expecting me?! Holy shit. This is insane.
I park, and walk over to the man in the booth who let me through. "Okay, Jessi, let's go." We get in the elevator and go up to the floor. As we are going up, my stomach won't stop turning. I'm so excited, yet extremely nervous. I hope they like me, and I hope they actually let me do something!
When the elevator doors open, it's so much more than I expected. The murder boards, the desks. The interrogation rooms, the paperwork. And, more importantly, the detectives. Most of them are men, and I'm totally okay with that. Suddenly, I hear yelling in a room down the hall. "Follow me," the man who brought me up here says. I follow him down the hall to the room where the yelling came from. A pretty, brunette detective stands in there arguing with who must be the captain. As the man knocks on the door, the captain says, "We'll talk later, detective." We walk in, and I brush the shoulder of the detective as she walks out.
"Hello! You must be Jessi. I would just like to say welcome from all of the detectives here at the twelfth. My name is Captain Gates. As the summer goes on, if you ever need anything, you talk to me. I'm the head of this precinct. Have you ever done anything like this before?" "Hi, Captain Gates. Nice to meet you. No, I've never done anything like this before, but I do have to say, I am extremely excited to be here. Thank you for allowing me to help out. Whatever you need me for, I'm here." "That's fantastic to know. You'll start out doing small, easy jobs, and sooner or later you'll do some harder things, along with gun training and helping with investigations." "Awesome! I can't wait!" I say enthusiastically. "I'm going to assign you to a detective, who will tell you what to do and will also teach you things along the way. Esposito! Come here!"
A tall, very good looking Hispanic mans walks through the Captain's door. "What's up, Captain?" he says. "This is Jessi. She's our summer intern. I'm assigning her to you for help and whatever you may need her for. She wants to become a detective later in life, so teach her all you know." "Hey, Jessi. Nice to meet you." I'm so mesmerized by his looks that I don't even realize that he's talking to me. "Oh, hey, detective. Nice to meet you too. Wait, wait, I'm working with him?" "Is there a problem with that?" Captain Gates asks. "Absolutely not. I couldn't be happier. Thanks, Captain." "No problem. See you guys later."
Best. Day. Ever.
