Chapter 18

"I look like a zombie," Jayda says as she enters Shawn's living room.

"No, you look perfect" He objects.

"You are only saying that because I am your girlfriend. It's only natural for you to make me feel good"

"Make you feel good, yes. But, its the truth. You are a very beautiful, smart, funny and stubborn woman that I love."

She's not ready to say the words yet so instead, she gives him a warm smile.

"It's okay. I'll wait until you're ready" He kisses her passionately and it was until a knock on the door interrupted did they stop.

"That must be Selena," Shawn said as they break from the kiss.

He hurried to the door while Jayda stayed back.

He walked back in shortly holding Selena with one hand and her bag in the other. Gigi walked in after them.

"And this must be Jayda," She said in her almighty expensive-looking midi length fur jacket.

She exudes so much class so much so that Jayda felt a tad envious.

"That's me" Jayda curves a smile at her and Selena.

"My name is Gigi" She introduced and stretched one arm forward.

The Ex-wife and Girlfriend introduction made Jayda feel awkward.

"I'll take it from here"

"Do you need me to pick her up before your night shift patrol or.." Gigi slowly lands her heated gaze on Jayda.

"I can stay back and watch her till morning if you don't mind" Jayda had no idea what she just said and by the time she realized she should take it back, it was already too late.

"It's sorted," Shawn says.

Gigi scoots down to the nine years old and kissed her on both cheeks.

"Be a good girl. I'll pick you up tomorrow." On that note, Gigi made her exit out of the apartment.

"Remember I told you about Jayda?" Shawn lifts Selena in his arms.

"Yes, I remember. Mummy said I shouldn't bother that she'll only be a girlfriend and that you both will get back together"

Jayda arch a surprising brow at Shawn.

"I'm sure it's a joke" he mouths at Jayda.

"Be nice Selena" He warned warmly yet stern.

************

Jayda and Selena got back to Shawn's apartment a little after ten at night while Shawn went straight to work instead, for his night shift.

"Do you need anything?" Jayda asked out of concern for the little girl who didn't say much all through the night.

Selena returned with a head shake.

"Are you sure?" Jayda couldn't help but ask again.

"I want to go to bed," The little one said and then made straight for her room.

Jayda heaved a deep sigh.

"You don't like me" she mouths in space. Her phone suddenly beeps and she searches for it in her bag.

"Hello," A female said

"Hi" Jayda responded

"I know it's late and I'm so sorry about that. I must speak with you and I wouldn't if it's not"

"Sorry, who are you?" Jayda said, upon realizing she still doesn't know who she's talking to.

"I apologize. My name is Khloé and I picked your number from your business page on Instagram. It's my daughter's birthday this Tuesday and the person that was supposed to bake the cake had family issues that prompted him to leave town. I need a red velvet cake with a display of Moana. I don't mind paying double of the normal charge for express delivery."

Euphoria's opening is the next day and although it feels too soon to take on special orders, Jayda couldn't turn her down.

"She's six years old," Khloé said, hoping to emotionally guilt trip Jayda in case she's considering to say no.

"I will send you a couple of designs tomorrow but you will be paying triple instead of double the price."

"Deal! Thank you so much"

"In the meantime, you can forward the upfront cash to the account number I'll be sending to you and the address for delivery"

"I will do just that. Thank you!"

The line goes deaf.

This wasn't how Jayda planned her shop's opening day but isn't that what you get for running a shop?

She immediately made a mental plan on how she'd be in the store and then head to the market to get extra ingredients for the client's order. She will start baking in the evening and have it ready by midnight and then for delivery by morning. It's going to be a long day and she might as well brace up now for the stress ahead.

"Congratulations mum," Lucy said as she placed two warm kisses on Jayda's cheeks.

"Thank you" Jayda responded with a smile on her face.

"I have to head back to campus now"

They engage in a brief hug before Lucy made her final exit out of the shop.

"So, want to celebrate tonight?" Shawn suggested as he pulled her into a mini hug.

"I can't... I have that delivery remember?"

He mouths a wide 'O' upon remembering she had told him about the job in the morning before she left his apartment.

"How's Selena?" Jayda asked after remembering their unpleasant time together.

"She's fine. She said to greet you before I left her with GiGi."

"I know that's a lie" Jayda countered.

Shawn's silence further proved her right.

"She's a sweet kid. It's just hard for her but I'm sure she'll adjust once she gets to know you"

Jayda didn't know what to say so she just gives him a quick nod.

"I have to oversee a couple of things so now is not the best time to bond" Jayda breaks free from the mini hug.

"We can do Tuesday night. Is that okay?"

"Even if it's not okay, I'll make it okay"

"If it's not convenient, we can always reschedule. I don't want to be a bother."

"You my dear J, is never a bother. I love you" He placed a soft kiss on her forehead.

Jayda could feel the sinkhole in her tummy and the more she tried to discard it, the more it grew wider.

Guilt. That's the reason for the imaginary sinkhole.

Shawn has several times confessed his love for her and though he's waiting patiently for her to get to the same level, Jayda couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor guy.  The whole situation looks a lot like giving someone a car gift for example and not receiving gratitude from the beneficiary.
