Wen Zhao was a child of a long-term servant of the Chen estate. When Yusheng was bought into the estate after what happened to his mother, Wen Zhao was assigned with the duty to accompany him. After witnessing the death of his mother, Yusheng had become awfully quiet. He didn't talk to anyone. All he did every day was practice with his sword without any rest.
At first, Wen Zhao felt bored to accompany Yusheng. A young master like Yusheng, who didn't like speaking and a talkative guy like him, were bound to be a bad match. Oftentimes, he would find that he was talking to himself because the listener didn't care to listen.
Wen Zhao was unclear about what Yusheng had gone through, and he didn't try to understand him either. He was just the child of a servant. Hence, he didn't feel the necessity to meddle in his matter. It was all until Wen Zhao accidentally heard others talk secretly about it.
Wen Zhao felt really sorry for Yusheng. After all, it was like nobody cared about him. The only one who genuinely cared for him was gone forever.
Wen Zhao decided to try his best to be Yusheng's friend. And as we know, in the future, he did end up becoming successful in that. It was difficult for Yusheng to reject this friendly and chaotic guy.
Wen Zhao did end up helping Yusheng come out of his hole, even if it was a little bit. As time went by, he also started admiring Yusheng. It was because of Yusheng that he decided to join the military and fight alongside his friend.
Wen Zhao and Yusheng met Wu Jiayi in their early teens. Wen Zhao was always an energetic guy and would run here and there if he had the chance. Sometimes, he would even manage to drag Yusheng. One particular day, when they were wandering around, they found Young Master Wu Jiayi, who had also sneaked out of his house.
Although Wu Jiayi was of similar age to them, he was small and skinny. He was born with a weak body, the kind that gets sick even at the gust of the wind.
Despite being sickly, he was quite smart. It was inevitable that he would end up becoming a great scholar in the future. Hence, his family members valued him a lot and always kept him protected in the house, never letting him go outside in fear of him getting sick.
The trio got along really well. Especially Wen Zhao and Wu Jiayi. Wen Zhao would always help Wu Jiayi to sneak out and have their own adventure, which made the members of the Wu family hate him a lot. Especially since the two of them sneaked out on a cold day that resulted in Wu Jiayi having a fever.
To Wu Jiayi, Yusheng was his only friend, and Wen Zhao was an existence far more special than that. It also went the same way for Wen Zhao. Maybe the budding feelings of teenage love were already growing in their hearts. It's just that being young, they failed to realize that at that time.
So when Wen Zhao wanted to go to the battlefield alongside Yusheng, Wu Jiayi got really angry and scared that Wen Zhao might be harmed.
"Why must you go? You can just join the imperial guards…" the young Wu Jiayi suggested.
Young Wen Zhao, "It's not the same. I've always wanted to fight alongside brother Yusheng. I want to have his back so that he can swing his sword to his fullest potential. It has been my dream. So I must go…"
"But… What if you get hurt? Then what will I do…" Young Wu Jiayi said sadly.
"Silly, I'll be safe and sound. I'm stronger than you think of me to be." Young Wen Zhao said while patting Wu Jiayi's head. "I'll be back soon."
"I want to go with you too!" Young Wu Jiayi said.
Young Wen Zhao, "No, you can't. It's unsafe for a tiny guy like you to go there. Besides, you're in the imperial academy. You have to finish your studies and become a great scholar."
