Jesy's POV:
The atmosphere at the dinner table is tense, to say the least. I look to my right to find Daphne pushing her food around the plate with her fork. When I place my hand on her thigh and give it a squeeze, she looks at me and gives me a small smile. Tonight is supposed to be about her and what she accomplished, but inevitably her Dad will fuck it up.
"So Daphne, what was your inspiration for your book?" My Mum asks.
Daphne lights up and I silently thank my Mum.
"I had a lot of inspiration but most of it came from Jesy."
"Me?" I question, shocked.
"Yes you, silly girl." She blushes a little.
I lean over a little bit to hug her and whisper in her ear. "We're gonna talk about exactly which parts I inspired, later."
When I pull back, Daphne is blushing like mad and I chuckle.
"Keep it appropriate at the table, girls." Daphne's Mum, Jackie teases.
"Yes, ma'am." Daphne and I say at the same time.
"Sorry I'm late!" Jackie's new husband, Gavin, calls out as he enters the dining room.
"Pop!" Daphne jumps up from her seat and hugs Gavin.
"My little superstar!" He looks at Jackie. "Did you give it to her yet?"
Jackie shakes her head. "I was waiting for you."
"Take a seat, kiddo, I'll be right back."
Daphne sits down and Jackie fixes Gavin a plate as he disappears into the kitchen. When he comes back, he puts a black, rectangular box in Daphne's hands then sits down in his chair.
"What's this?" Daphne asks as she looks from the box to Gavin and Jackie.
"Your Mum and I talked about how proud we are of you. You've kept up your grades while playing volleyball, writing a book, and countless other things. We're proud of you for everything you've accomplished and we know you've got a bright future ahead of you. This gift can't begin to describe how proud we are of you. Good ahead and open it."
A gasp leaves Daphne's mouth when she opens the box. Resting in the box is a star pendant with diamonds.
"We did have some help picking it out." Jackie says with a smile, sending a look in my direction.
"You helped them pick it out?" Daphne looks at me.
I nod.
Daphne kisses my cheek and I blush.
"Thank you, baby." She says softly.
Gavin gets up, takes the necklace out of the box, and helps Daphne put it on. After it's on, Gavin kisses the top of Daphne's head.
"Elijah liked the star and Jesy said you would definitely like it." Jackie says.
"I absolutely love it!" Daphne gushes. "I want to thank you two. You've supported me through everything, been at every game no matter what, you listened to my insane story ideas." She says to Jackie and Gavin with a small, watery laugh. "Janice, I couldn't have asked for a better editor for my book." She turns in her chair to face me. "Jes, baby, you've put up with me for whatever reason. You are my rock, you keep me grounded, and usually stop me from doing anything super crazy." Daphne chuckles. "I'm so lucky to be your girlfriend. I love you, baby."
Mum and Jackie coo at Daphne and I as we hug each other tightly.
"I love you too, kitten." I whisper in her ear.
