His mind raced. Kyle had come here. Not to hurt Talia, but to frighten her. He'd smelled the blood when he first approached the front door. He'd almost broken down her door until he realized it hadn't been her blood and their connection hadn't given him any reason to fear she'd been hurt.
Only that she'd been afraid.
He glanced down at the girl laying on his lap. Sleeping her fears away and tucked some of her hair behind her ear. If only he could tell her why he was so protective over her. But Edmund had been specific on what she needed to know about herself.
And it tor him apart. Her questions tore him apart. He kissed the top of her head and his phone started vibrating.
"Amala," he answered. "What's going on?"
He'd left Amala to deal with the cops and the council after feeling Talia's fear. He just hadn't realized how late it had gotten or that he hadn't made an effort to check on her. But amala stayed cool as she told him the events of the night. The girl had turned out to be another missing hiker who resembled Talia.
"She's been missing for six weeks," Amala said.
He knew how she hadn't been found before now. There were plenty of caves and forested areas Kyle could have kept her. Talia shifted on the couch and the corner of her mouth curled upwards.
She could easily become one of those girls. Scared, hidden and waiting to be slaughtered.
He wouldn't let that happen. Not if it meant watching her die. His fingers tightened around his phone as Amala continued about their ban and how it would be the last time they would be involved in the human affairs.
It was a small problem in the matters at hand. He reminded Amala that they weren't meant to meddle in those of human affairs. Even if they were a part of it. He had other ways of learning the affiars amongst them.
"They'll learn soon enough how much they need us," the door connecting to the shop opened and he heard Edmund digging through the fridge. "Just keep out of things, be a part of the community andwe'll figure it out," he waited for her to agree and hung up the phone.
Jason took a step into the kitchen. For moment he braced himself as Edmund said nothing. Maybe he'd ruinded the friendship he had. Edmund tipped back his beer and took one big gulp before sitting it on the counter.
"There was another woman," Edmund said taking another sip of his beer. "That makes four,"
"He has five to go," Said Jason. "We should keep an eye on his movements,"
"And what about Talia?" asked Edmund. "She'd the only person that matters and I...." he swallowed andJason saw the grandfather Edmund had become.
"I'm not leaving her again,"
He heard rustling from the living room and listened as Talia settled back to peaceful bliss.
Bliss. Something he only had with her.
"When it comes to the bitter end, would you protect her?"
Again the fear for Talia's life threatened to choke the air out of his lungs. Her life that meant moer than his ever would.
"You don't have to worry about that," Jason heard the pitter patter of Talia's feet. "I'll do what I can to keep her safe,"
