The next day, we go to the same office and wait for the director to arrive. I look out over the Japanese garden to see if the gardeners are at work. Against my expectation, they are nowhere to be found. My heart reacts to this disappointment, and the feeling of sadness permeates.
I feel as if my heart is reacting independently from my brain. The feeling of my heart is much stronger than the rational thinking of my brain. As I am drowning in the sadness in my heart, the director walks into the office. He greets us with a smile.
"Good morning Dr. Waxman and Ms. Kumar! I hope you are enjoying your stay in the bay area. San Francisco is a beautiful city to visit!"
"Today, I will explain what we have discovered about heart intelligence through more than twenty years of research. You might wonder what heart intelligence is. Heart intelligence is the dynamics of awareness and intuition humans experience when the mind and emotions are balanced with the heart."
"When we pay more attention to what our heart is communicating, we can access this heart intelligence. With the advancement of scientific knowledge, humans believed that intelligence—our ability to learn, understand, and reason—was solely a function of the brain, even though there is ample evidence in ancient Eastern and Native American civilizations to suggest that there is intelligence in the heart."
"The scientists at our Foundation posed the theory that the heart actually transfers intelligence to emotions and instills emotional management power. In other words, heart intelligence is the true source of emotional intelligence."
"We have concluded that intelligence and intuition are heightened when we learn to listen more deeply to our own hearts. The more we learn to listen to and follow our heart intelligence, the more educated, balanced, and coherent our emotions become."
"Without the heart's guiding influence, we easily fall prey to reactive emotions such as insecurity, anger, fear, and blame. In the end, how we feel is very important for our emotional management."
"Earlier research shows that negative emotions throw the nervous system out of balance. Heart rhythms become disorderly and appear as jagged lines on a heart monitor. Negative emotions place tremendous stress on the physical heart and other organs, causing serious health problems as a result."
"Positive emotions, by contrast, are found to increase order and balance in the nervous system and produce smooth, harmonious heart rhythms. Not only do positive emotions reduce stress, but they also actually enhance people's ability to perceive the world around them clearly. For thousands of years, many sages have said that the heart is the center of our intelligence. And our science is finally catching up to it."
The director shows us many scientific statistics and data to prove his viewpoints.
"The next subject is heart coherence. What is heart coherence? Can you guess what it is, Ms. Kumar?"
I think for a few seconds and guess the real meaning he is trying to convey.
"Coherent means when something is logical or well organized. Or being able to express yourself in a clear way that others can easily understand."
"So I guess that heart coherence is when the heart is in order and expresses itself in clarity without confusion."
The director smiles and continues.
"That is not bad! It is actually a pretty good answer, Ms. Kumar!"
"When the heart is coherent, life processes' regulation becomes efficient, optimally free-flowing, and easy. That is when we are experiencing happiness or being positive."
"Your respiration is stable."
"Your brain waves create nice, even hills."
"Your heart rate is lower."
"They are all well synchronized. Your physiological features completely correlate with your feelings. That is how we are made."
"When you experience negative feelings, such as anger, anxiety, and frustration, your heart is in an incoherent state. Your respiration is quicker. Your brain waves are jagged. Your heart rate is faster. You can't think straight."
"For the brain and nervous system to function optimally, the neural activity which encodes and distributes information must be stable and function in a coordinated and balanced manner. The brain's various parts must also synchronize their activity for information to be smoothly processed and communicated."
"When your heart is in your positive state, it will produce the optimal function. Everything will be in harmony. This is a scientific fact, and you can measure it. The numbers will validate the result."
"Our last subject for today is global coherence: how our heart coherence will affect the people or environment around us. More and more research validates that your thoughts not only affect you and your health and perspective on life, they also greatly influence people around you and your surrounding environment."
"We are learning much more about how and why our presence—and especially our moods and emotions—can affect others and sense how others feel. There is ample evidence that our heart coherence is somehow interrelated with others."
"One experiment shows that a dog's heart rhythms became more coherent when the boy intentionally shifted to a coherent state using our technique. The boy wasn't petting or interacting with the dog physically."
"Another experiment involved a woman in a corral with her horse. Without physical interaction, she consciously shifted into a coherent state. The horse's heart rhythms shifted to a more ordered pattern."
"In some cases, researchers detected synchronization between a mother's brain waves and her baby's heartbeat. They weren't even in physical contact. When the mother focused her attention on her baby, her brain waves automatically synchronized to the baby's heartbeats. How do you explain these experiments?"
"After extensive research, we came to conclude that the universe is wholly and enduringly interconnected and coherent. Complex living systems, including human beings, are composed of numerous dynamic, interconnected networks of biological structures and processes."
"As people increase personal coherence, they affect families, workplaces, and the world at large. It became evident that increasing numbers of people add coherent energy to the global field. It helps strengthen and stabilize mutually beneficial feedback loops among human beings and with the earth itself."
"If you are in an incoherent state, you are weakening and destabilizing the common energetic field. Therefore how you feel every day is crucial, not only for yourself but for others as well. I think this is enough for today. We covered a lot."
"We will stop right here because you need to take an airplane going back to New York this evening. Next time when you visit me, I would love to explain how our hearts are connected to our mother earth and the universe."
"Have a safe trip back home, and I would love to know the progress of your research. We will definitely keep in touch!"
This is how we ended our second day. We thank him for his valuable time and the information that he shared with us. We walk out of the institute feeling that our entire reality has shifted.
I still search for the gardener until the gate of the institute closes. He is nowhere to be found. I finally give up hope and get in the car on the passenger side. Dr. Waxman drives off to the San Francisco airport.
I learned that the heart has its own intelligence, and it is physically wired to people around us and our environment at large. My heart is aching to be united with someone I don't know. I am sure my heart is searching for someone.
