"Bella we're leaving." His words echoed through my mind. I took a deep breath as he continued on, "Carlisle can barely pass for thirty, he's claiming thirty three now. We had to move on soon anyway." I stared at his blank expression trying to understand what he meant, then the words settled in. "When you say we-" "I meant my family, and myself." Each word was separate and distinct. " What happened with Jasper-that was nothing, Edward, nothing!" I spoke panicked. You're right," he agreed "Nothing that wasn't to be expected" "No! This is about my soul isn't it?!" I shouted, furious, the words exploding out of me, but somehow it still sounded like a plea. "Carlisle told me about that, and I don't care, Edward. I don't care! You can have my soul, I don't want it without you-It's yours already!" He stared at me blankly, his normally smooth honey eyes were a solid topaz. He paused as if thinking about his words before speaking, " I don't want it, I don't want you." "You....don't....want me?" I tried the words out, confused by the way it sounded placed in that order. "No." His voice was as cold as ever, "What happened, opened my eyes. I'm . . . tired of pretending to be something I'm not, Bella. I'm not human. I've let this go on far too long." "Don't," My voice was just a whisper now; awareness was beginning to seep through me, trickling like acid through my veins. "Don't do this." He just stared at me, and I could tell in his eyes that my words were far too late, he already had. "Don't worry Bella, it will be like I never existed. Do me a favor, don't get yourself killed, for Charlies sake." I closed my eyes as he placed a light kiss on my forehead, then there was a light unnatural breeze. My eyes flashed open. The leaves on a small vine maple shuddered with the gentle wind of his passage. He was gone. With shaky legs, ignoring the fact that my action was useless, I followed him into the forest. The evidence of his path had disappeared instantly. There were no footprints, the leaves were still again, but I walked forward without thinking. I could not do anything else, I had to keep moving. If I stopped looking for him, it was over. I would never see any of them again. I walked and walked. Time made no sense as I pushed slowly through the thick undergrowth. It was hours passing, but also only seconds. Maybe it felt like time had frozen because the forest looked the same no matter how far I traveled forward. Eventually I trip over a fallen branch and fell, having no motivation to get up, I lie there feeling the slight drizzle that has been falling. I just lie there numb, closing my eyes. The time passed quickly, or at least the sky showed such. Everything still felt frozen. I heard my name being called in the distance, I probably should respond to that, but I couldn't seem to get my voice to work. I closed my eyes again giving up on responding. The slight huff of a nearby animal caused me to open my eyes spotting a dark shadow, then closed them again. I couldn't find the will to care for whatever was out there. Suddenly I feel a pair of strong arms lift me up. I open my eyes seeing Leah Clearwater carrying me. I sigh and nuzzle into her chest. She was warm, and her arms felt like a safe haven as I relaxed against her. I felt myself drift off as the swaying rhythm of her walk lulled me to sleep. "Sleep little one, you're safe now." her voice was soft with a slight gruff underline to it. I feel myself getting transferred into a different set of arms. I woke up looking up seeing Sam Uley carrying me, I whimpered in discomfort, his muscles felt hard against my skin. He wasn't soft like Leah, I didn't like that. "It would look weird if I carried her. Drop her and you won't see the light of day." Leah growled out. I shuddered lightly, a reaction I think that none of us expected. Sam and Leah both look down at me then look back to each other. "I won't drop her." he spoke confidently. Sam walked away from Leah. I watched her, my eyes pleading. I didn't want her to go. She mouthed the words 'later'. I relaxed as we walked out of the woods. "I've got her!" Sam called out, I heard a crowd of people spoke all at once in relief. I looked around as Charlie came rushing over. "Is she hurt, why isn't she walking?" he spoke panicked. Sam spoke above everyone. "She's fine she just keeps repeating 'He's gone'" was I saying that out loud? I felt my weight being shifted as Charlie took me out of Sam's arms.I felt him wobble under my weight, I wanted to protest. To tell him I could walk, but I still couldn't find my voice. "Are you sure you can carry her?" Sam's voice was filled with doubt and concern. "I've got her." Charlie sounded confident, but unlike Sam it sounded like he still could have dropped me. Sam opened the door and held it open as Charlie rushed in with me and over to the couch. He gently set me down and covered me with a blanket. I heard him shuffle back to the door and thank the people that helped with the search. I closed my eyes again blocking everything out. Eventually I heard the door close and heard Charlie walk across the room and over to his chair. I heard him sit down and let out a huff. He sounded tired, I knew I should feel guilty, but I couldn't feel anything. Just emptiness. I listened to Charlie's breathing until it slowed, I opened my eyes and looked over at him. He had fallen asleep, I got up covering him with the blanket he had draped over me and tucked it under his chin. I made my way up the stairs and into my room. I opened my window wanting some fresh air then walked to my bed sitting down pulling my knees to my chest and sitting my chin on top of them. I stared out the window until I heard a voice outside. "Bella?" I walked to the window and looked down noticing Leah. She smiled up at me gently. "Move back, I'm coming up." I backed up and watched as she climbed up the tree that was outside of my window. When she reached the same height as my window she jumped towards it. I felt a scream build up in my throat as I waited for her to fall, but she caught herself and pulled herself into the window landing on the floor with a thud. We both froze and listened. I heard Charlie's snoring stop a shuffle then his snoring continued again. Leah smiled proud of herself before I launched myself at her hugging her torso burying my head and face in her shoulder breathing in her scent. I felt her press her face to my hair and lifted me up carrying me to my bed. She sat down sitting me in her lap, she rocked me lightly. I felt my body relax as she rocked me, her scent was also helping. I closed my eyes finally feeling something besides numb, I was content. "I'm sorry." Her voice was filled with apology and concern. "S'not your fault" I spoke in a weak voice. She sighed and started humming a random tune, slowly I drifted off to sleep in the arms of my guardian angel.
