My last class of the day just ended. The school bell rang, signaling that we were finally allowed to leave the building. It's Tuesday, almost the middle of the week. And today, I'm moving out. Not just from my school, but from my house too.
My mom found a new boyfriend. Again. She's a successful businesswoman, but absolutely terrible at choosing men. My dad left when I was younger. I guess he couldn't handle her success. Since then, she's dated a lot, but nothing ever lasted.
We've moved multiple times, but this is the first time I'm changing schools too. I hate it. I'm leaving my best friend behind. I've known her for years, and I don't let many people get close to me. That's why she's my only friend right now.
I pull my last textbooks from my locker and slide them into my bag. When I close the door, I see her standing there, lips pouting as she looks at me.
Rosé: "Y/N? Do you really have to go? Can't you just stay? It's so unfair that she's forcing you to move again."
You: "You know I'll be back soon. Give it a few weeks. I'll be back. It never works out. It never does."
Rosé: "But this time she's making you change schools too. In the middle of the school year. Doesn't she realize how awkward that's going to be for you?"
You: "I don't want to go either. But I'll be back before you know it."
Rosé knows how things are with my mom. She's always busy, barely ever home. And when I do see her, she never really pays attention to me. I've learned to deal with it. It doesn't hurt as much as it did in the beginning.
You: "I have to go now. My mom told me to hurry, apparently we have a long drive ahead of us."
Rosé: "I'm going to miss you. Text me when you get there. And call me sometimes, okay?"
You: "Of course. I'll text you. I'll miss you too. But I'll be back before you know it."
We share one last hug before saying goodbye. Then I make my way out of the school building and head toward the parking lot. I immediately recognize my mom's car. I open the door and slide into the seat beside her.
Mom: "Hey, darling. How was school?"
You: "Okay, I guess. Are you sure I can't stay here? I don't want to transfer right now."
Mom: "Our new home is three hours away, so a new school is necessary. I think your new stepbrothers will be happy to have you at their school."
Stepbrothers? What? She never mentioned that part before.
You: "Rewind that, Mom. I have stepbrothers? Why are you only telling me this now?"
Mom: "I know you're not good with new people. But there's no turning back now. Please, be nice to them. I really think I've finally found the one."
That sentence sounds way too familiar. I've heard it so many times, and every time it ends the same, with her heartbroken. It's not that I don't support her, but we've moved so often that I can't bring myself to believe it anymore.
The rest of the ride is quiet. Music plays softly while my mom focuses on the road. I distract myself with a game on my phone. After three long hours, we finally arrive. She parks in front of a huge house. I know her new boyfriend is a businessman too, they met through work.
I grab my suitcase from the trunk. I packed it last night. I didn't bring much with me. I'm pretty sure we won't be staying for very long anyway.
