-the clouds are built in shades of black and white, a tinge of light blue striking out. cotton-like and fluffy, they overlap each other like a sea of people hovering to get noticed, or a sea of people to block the afternoon rays.
it's a cloudy sunday.
jennie ruby jane kim have completely made up her mind about resuming her art classes, with the persuasion of chungha kim, a businesswoman, who's on and about working hard to stay, permanently, in london; and the conviction of lalisa manoban, a twenty-seven year-old who, as far as jennie could tell, still and all figuring out what her life is about.
jennie is the youngest of the 4 sisters. oh joohyun, the oldest – faithfully married to oh sehun with two kids, tied by a great depth of passion which backwashed destitution and parsimony. jisoo, a struggling writer although loved by all for her strong character, left home after rejecting lalisa's proposal to follow what she knows best. chaeyoung, the musician in the family, who could go on days playing the piano, with her sisters singing made-up melodies and monkey dances. always the maternal, gentle, timid kind. and jennie, the youngest, who scribbles whatever her mind attracts most thought, or what her fellows tell her to (that once got her in trouble and got a beating by mr. bang, her subject).
in her case, she's the only daughter of the kim's who could provide for them — not joohyun getting sick of being poor ("why do i have to work hard every single day?"), not jisoo who's in new york figuring herself and managing her crafts (and her temper), nor chaeyoung helping mother with her work. she's the only hope.
which brings her back to the day of joohyun's wedding, ( a sunny day with a simple makeshift altar in front of their humble abode, picked fresh flowers and greens wrapped around furniture they occupied at, with cakes and breads and fine wine) their aunt susan informing her she's going to france, with her assistance, and that she can pursue her love for art. jopping (jumping and popping) with a smile (dare she say) brighter than the bride as she delivers it to her mother that came crashing down by jisoo's assumption — "i am going with you susan? really?" and jennie breaking her stupor by correcting her — "no, ji, i am going with aunt susan" as she clutches her aunt's arms. the youngest was content with the fall of her sister's smile just as she did to her, just as she made her feel. how dare she be mistaken with who's more deserving to be somewhere else here.
jennie wouldn't be surprised if everyone ask for confirmation if she hates her sister. she does. more that she thought she would.
because jisoo is daring, and independent, and cool, and knows what she wants and never cared of what people thought of her. there are more to say that would prove she's better than jennie. although it is not her intention to compare each other, she is just proving why she's been under her shadow for years and years and years and years till aunt susan saved her to france.
