Happy?

We both got up and said our goodbyes before heading our separate ways. I had originally felt sad at the thought of separating with the electrifying girl but now, I feel light. I felt as though my body had stopped drooping. I guess a weight had been lifted after sharing my story with Jasper.

As I entered my English class, I sent a slight nod to my teacher before heading to my seat in the back right corner of the room. At the beginning of the year, I had chosen to sit in the back near the large window. My class was on the second floor of the school so I had a nice view of the front gardens.

Because it was spring, there were many varieties of colors, shades, and species of flowers blooming. Each garden was dedicated to a class and every student in that class was able to plant a flower or small plant of their choice. Most people chose roses or lilies. I was the only person who chose a bright blue forget-me-not. My mother and aunts favorite flower, a single flower that represents the memory of those that have passed but continue to live in our memories.

I, once again, shoved my earbuds into my ears, pressed shuffle on my playlist and closed my eyes. I assume that I may have fallen asleep for around ten minutes before Mark was kicking me awake. Mark sat in the desk beside me in almost all of our classes and he was always looking out for me when I would doze off during a lecture.

"Um... OW!" I whisper yelled at Mark with a frown on my face "you didn't have to kick THAT hard you know."

"Oh sorry miss sleeping beauty but you're such a heavy sleeper that anything less harsh wouldn't work" Mark replies with a snarky tone. This made me chuckle a little which then made Marks eyes go wide. "Woah, y-you're actually human and can feel human happiness!?"

"Ok now that was just harsh" I frowned at the raven haired boy once again. "Just because I'm not all bubbly and girly doesn't mean I don't have emotions and feelings!"

"I know I know, I'm just messing with ya" Mark said "but do you know how long I've been trying to make you laugh? I've been making jokes for months and this is the first time you laughed at something I said. It may not have been intended for you to laugh, but I'll take the win."

I smiled as Mark turned back to his work and I drummed my fingers on my desk to the beat of my music. It was the first time in a very long time that I managed to be even slightly happy and not be tortured by the picture of my parents that normally popped into my head at random times.

I hadn't realized it at the time, but that one conversation I had on the roof really changed me. I couldn't help thinking that I was... happy?

-Time Skip-

The bell signaled the end of my free period and I got up, grabbed my stuff and waited for Mark to grab his belongings as well. As we walked, I noticed that I seemed to be talking more with Mark as he ranted on about something like he normally did. At the beginning of the year, he just seemed to follow me to our shared classes and would talk as if he had some purpose that I was a part of. I used to just tune him out or simply listen. Now, I was responding with light nods and hums to indicate I was listening and when I agreed with a statement he said.

We separated at the locker rooms to change into our gym uniforms. I waited outside the room and waited for the other girls to finish changing so I would be able to change alone. I watched as girls filed out of the room wearing mostly similar uniforms on their way to the large gym doors. We were given the choice to personalize our gym uniforms at the beginning of the year as long as the school colors were used. Most girls chose short spandex shorts and tight cropped tops.

I walked into the change room and opened my bag. I pulled out a loose white T-shirt with a yellow rimmed collar, a pair of blue basketball shorts and some black runners. I stripped off my regular hoodie, tank top and black jeans before I heard the door creak open. Jasper walked in and I froze. She looked at my arms and legs. "The scars" I thought before trying to cover myself up. I had already told her my story but that didn't prevent the shocked expression she currently had.

"I-I'm so sorry, I didn't think anyone was in here" Jasper sputtered out in her flustered and shocked state as she turned around.

I finished changing quickly before answering "it's fine, you didn't know so don't worry about it." I left the room after shoving my belongings into the corner.

I met up with Mark for our warm up. We always did some stretches and a light work out before we participated in the main activity. Mark talked while he held my feet for sit ups and I continued to nod and hum as a way of acknowledging him. After our warm up, everyone huddled up near the center of the gym for instructions.

"Alright kids, were doing flag football today!" the gym teacher said with a slightly unsettling enthusiasm. Most of the girls and a few boys gowned and made their way over to the bleachers. The rest of us lined up to get our flags before separating into teams.

I was on Mark's team and we had blue flags. I didn't bother checking who was on the red team before a head of blue locks caught my eye.

-Time Skip because the author knows how to play the game but doesn't want to write it out :) -

We ended the game with a win. I managed to get two touchdowns while mark got one. I Didn't have much trouble until Jasper was swapped in because one of the boys sprained his ankle while trying to chase me. I had underestimated her at first because she was the only one who managed to get one of my flags during the game. She even managed to get a touchdown herself. And I was pleasantly surprised to have a challenge for once at this school.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Author: Thank you so much for being patient, I will do my best to have the next part written later today as I promised but I may not be able to write every week like I originally planned. It turns out that taking grade eleven courses in grade nine takes up a lot of my time. Again, than you so much for understanding and I hope you continue to enjoy my story.
