"Norissa, do you intend to act as a mother figure to Eryn?" asked Norissa's father.
"No. She is only my friend," said Norissa.
"Very well. Eryn, I am King Akira. Norissa, take Eryn to Glondris and ask if she'll be her mother."
"Glondris. Right. Come on, Eryn." Norissa led Eryn away from King Akira and into a separate room.
"Good evening, Glondris," said Norissa to a woman kneeling above a bed where a boy looking to be about 9 years old slept. "Have I interrupted anything?"
"Of course not, Norissa," said Glondris. "Who is this?"
"This is Eryn. She is new to the pack, and she needs a mother. I was wondering if you could...?"
"I'd love to!" Glondris smiled in a way that filled Eryn with a warmth, almost like sitting by a blazing fireplace. She gestured to an empty bed beside the boy's bed. "Eryn, you may sleep here. This is Pisces, your brother."
Eryn sat on her new bed. She made eye contact with Pisces. She glimpsed the side of Pisces's neck and noticed a hole that went all the way through his neck.
"How'd that get there?" she asked.
Pisces didn't respond.
Of course, she thought, he's mute. She wished she could get to know her new brother better. She just wished he could talk to her.
