Cap. 8 As long as we have each other

Everything was ready for dinner: the table was ready, the food was ready, and there was the right atmosphere. Little by little the guests started to arrive, till the last person left was Brett. Kira was excited, she wanted to see the girl who had prevented her to end up with Brett. While she was waiting, she decided to speak with Eddy: she felt guilty for bothering his best friend.

Kira: "Eddy, I know we didn't start off with the right feet, and I'm sorry for bothering Brett. I refused to believe he really had a girlfriend"

Eddy: "Don't worry, Belle told me you've just left a toxic relationship, just don't tell Brett's partner about these past days, it would be disgraceful..."

Kira: "Sure...I'm so excited to see this girl!"

Eddy: "Me too!"

Kira: "Isn't your partner coming as well?"

Eddy: "Yeah I think in a few minutes my mysterious person will be there as well"

The plan was simple: when Brett walked in Eddy was supposed to say "oh my partner has arrived", and Brett should have answered "oh look, mine is already here", and they would have exchanged a quick peck. Eddy could feel his hands getting sweaty and his heart nearly exploding out of his chest. Brett was walking the steps from the car to the building. He stopped right in front of the wooden front door and looked for Belle's doorbell. He was wearing his best suit and had washed himself twice with his usual soap to have the smell Eddy liked on. He lifted one hand and pushed violently on the button.

As Eddy heard the doorbell, he felt his heart skipping a beat, and his legs weakening. Brett walked up the stairs feeling every step he took more difficult than the previous one. Eddy stood up and made his way to the door followed by Kira.

Kira: "Let me stay in front of you, you're taller!"

Eddy took a step back and realized in that moment that everybody was waiting for Brett to come in with the girl. He felt his legs nearly surrender. He thought about Brett's words "as long as we have each other we can face the rest of the world". He felt a shiver going up his back giving him the strength to look ahead at the door handle moving. Brett took a step in searching for Eddy's black eyes. Their gazes crossed.

Kira: "It's not fair! Where is she??"

Brett smiled still staring at Eddy and with a courage he didn't know he owned he replied

Brett: "Actually HE is already here"

Eddy: "Now mine has arrived too!"

They got closer, forgetting everyone else. They exchange a quick peck and closed their eyes leaning their foreheads one on the other, cupping each other's cheeks.

The room remained silent for some seconds. Eddy was the first to open his eyes. He took Brett's hand and pulled him inside the room surrounded by the astonished looks of the other guests.

Belle: "Well...the dinner's ready!"

While the group of people moved to the other room, Brett removed his coat with Eddy still by his side. The group was far enough for them to talk without being heard. Brett let himself fall in Eddy's arm nearly passing out on his lover. The lavender scent welcomed him.

Brett: "Ohf!"

Eddy: "Shhhh, it's done, the hard part is done"

Brett: "I thought for a second my hearth would have exploded!"

Eddy: "Yeah me too, let's have dinner now ok?"

Brett: "I love you Eddy"

Eddy: "I love you koala"

Eddy pushed Brett's body to make him stand. He stretched his neck and gave a kiss to his koala. They moved to the other room to find out that the only free seats left were near Kira. Brett sat down near her and Eddy next to him. She kept looking at him, embarrassed: she had flirted with Brett in front of his boyfriend! The other people at the table had already switched the topic of the conversation. Belle entered the room with a large saucepan. It was heavy, she put it on the table making a deaf sound and started to fill up the dishes. At the end she sat down next to her brother.

Belle: "I think you know I had guessed it"

Eddy: "Yup, when did you understand?"

Belle: "Yesterday evening on the way to the disco: the story you told didn't make sense and I eventually figured out why. Then I had the proof when I saw you sleeping together..."

Eddy: "Crap, you saw us?!"

Belle. "Yes, you looked so peaceful with Brett in your arms"

Eddy: "Mh...I think I forgot how to sleep alone..."

Belle: "Now, do you want to tell me what really happened that night?"

Eddy: "I told Brett I was about to leave and he exploded. We both understood how stupid we had been during these past years..."

Belle: "So the morning after when I met you at your place you had just..."

Eddy: "We had just had our first night together, yes!"

Belle: "Will you ever tell mum and dad about him?"

Eddy: "Not yet...please don't tell them"

Belle: "Well it's your choice...I'll be next to you, but you'll have to do it one day!"

Eddy: "Yeah I know"

Meanwhile Brett and Kira were also having a conversation.

Brett: "I hope I didn't treat you bad, sorry but my boy is quite jealous"

Kira: "No no, it was my fault, I shouldn't have forced you I'm sorry, I've just come out of a toxic relationship, and I was desperately looking for a replacement. Don't get me wrong, you're super-nice and cute, Eddy is lucky to have you by his side."

Brett: "Trust me I'm the lucky one: Eddy's amazing"

Kira: "Wow that glow in your eyes when you talk about him. How did you end up together, Belle told me you two have been best friends for quite a while, so how did you understand?"

Brett: "Oh It's a funny story!..."

The night was about to end, it was time for one last toast. Belle stood up and raised her glass to get the attention of the crowd.

Belle: "I would like to make a toast to this amazing holiday! Cheers!"

All-together: "Cheers"

After a while many people had gone, only Belle and the happy couple were left, chatting on the couch.

Belle: "I'm so glad for you guys! Hope that it hasn't been too difficult"

Brett: "Well I nearly passed out when your friend asked me about the girl but when I saw his eyes, I started breathing again"

Eddy: "For me it was hard to not kill Kira during the holiday, I thought she was a reasonable person and seeing her flirting with my koala even after you told her about Brett's relationship was painful"

Belle: "Koala? How sweet!"

Brett: "Yup! He's the best...time to go!"

Eddy: "Yeah let's go, it's quite late!"

Belle: "See you next time guys!"
