A call from Veronica made Evangeline wake up from her deep slumber. The cellphone which she lay on top of the side table vibrated and made a buzzing sound that awakened her. Her mother's name was on the screen. She slid her thumb on the screen to answer the call.
"Yes, Mama?" Evangeline said. She was fully awake now and sat on the bed.
"It's your Papa, we are in the emergency room. Come quickly." Veronica's voice trailed off in a soft sobbing.
"We are on our way," Evangeline said. Jumping out from the bed.
Evangeline had woken the kids. She just put on some jackets over their t-shirts and pajamas. Emery was responsible enough to assist her with Ernestine while she went back to her own bedroom and woken Evander. She wore a jacket as well on top of her braless shirt and pajamas. She took her purse and her cellular phone and they went outside to hail a cab. Since their house was a walking distance from the highway, they still have to walk toward it. The night was cold and all four of them held each other's hands. It was after five minutes when the cab arrived.
Even if the kids were sleepy, they were a little bit excited to go to the hospital not realizing how serious the situation was at the moment. Or not having ideas what really was the situation in the hospital.
In the hospital's emergency room comes different kinds of races. These people came from different provinces as well. They were also having different kinds of situations and illnesses. Some suffered from strokes, like Evangeline's father. Others met vehicular accidents, some also being wounded from a fight. There were a lot of patients and the emergency room was not enough to cater to all those people. The doctors and nurses were like bees, flying every part of the room from patient to patient. The security guard would not let Evangeline and the kids go inside because according to the guard, she was bringing the kids into danger by exposing them to different kinds of illnesses. The guard was right. Evangeline called her mother and asked who was with her. She said that her sister Estella was with them. Evangeline told her mother if Estella could go outside for a while to watch over for the kids while she went inside. Estella agreed and they met outside the emergency room. They embraced each other. Estella was crying.
"How is Papa?" Evangeline asked.
"I'm not sure. We were almost there for over an hour but still, there are no doctors who checked on him."
"Okay, I'll go inside. I'll be back as soon as possible."
"Okay. Don't worry about the kids, I'll watch over them."
Evangeline gave her children a smile before she went inside. There were countless shadowy creatures hovering on each patient. Only two colors. The black and the white. Some looked in her direction but they stood rooted to where they were before she entered the room. Evangeline took a deep breath of relief when she saw the shadowy creature hovering over her father. It was white, which means that her father was not going to die. Just an emergency reminder to watch his health more closely than before.
"Ma," Evangeline called out for Veronica.
"I'm so scared, Eve," Veronica said. She hugged her daughter so tight.
"He's going to be fine Ma. Has any doctor checked on him already?" Evangeline said. Feeling her mother's trembling body against her.
"No. They haven't checked on him yet."
"Okay, you stay here while I go over there and check for Papa's record."
Veronica just nodded and watched her eldest daughter make her way toward the nurse station. Evangeline asked if it was possible that they would transfer their father into another hospital. The nurse's lips formed a crooked smile and raised a brow.
