Zular and Zach enter a major city near the south border of the United States. The two have grown somewhat fond of each other since they first met back in the bank's vault. Though Zach still rarely talks, still weary of the Monsters of Silence.
Zach knows Zular wouldn't be able to take on a lot of the monsters, and Zach can't even take on one on his own. Knowing this he only speaks when it's urgent or when he's full of emotion, like the memory at Stone Road.
The same question still runs through Zular's mind though. Why can't I hurt him? With a new question; Why do I feel the need to protect him? This isn't what I'm evolved to do! He scolds himself in his thoughts, sometimes out loud in a way that Zach can't hear or understand. He fears, yes fears, what Zach might think of him if he knew that Zular was basically forced into helping the human. In Zular's thoughts he was being forced anyways.
Zach still doesn't understand why the shadow creature is doing this either. It's strange. A smarter and deadlier creature that is made to kill any breathing thing that makes noise, won't kill him. Does this mean something? What is to become of him or the creature?
The two of them are both confused as to why the two were stuck together. But then again, what kind of good partnership didn't start with hate?
The two continue walking deeper into the urban city. Looking around for more monsters. Zular doesn't know what to classify them as and he's one of them. He calls them idiots and horrible use for skin and bones. But he has to admit that they're good at killing. Though they do it in random groups and sometimes go after each other.
Zach takes a deep breath in and lets it out slowly, watching his warm breath against the cold. His heart quickens by half a beat and Zular notices. He looks over at Zach curiously.
"What's wrong?" Zular asks, worried that Zach might be in danger, yet hopeful he might be. Zach breathes out again, only more slowly as Zular watches. The creature calculates this in his head and realizes that it's cold.
"Oh." He says and looks at where they came from. "We have to move quicker then." The creature adds. Zach nods and Zular instructs him to get on his back. The traveller looks at the creature curiously, unable to make something of this. He does get on though, he feels like he has no choice but to obey.
The shadow creature adjusts to the weight before abruptly running quicker than a jaguar. Zach holds on tightly, afraid to let go and go flying.
Zular runs for an hour, his breath steady and his shadow fur coming off and dissolving in the light. Zach's hands were sore and cramped from the tight grip he had the whole way there. Even though the shadow creature told him there's nothing to fear. But the traveller is weary. Still unsure if the creature is being honest even after a month and a half. Maybe more.
Time does not matter now. It's only survival that counts these days.
These long, brutal days of choices between life and death for carbon-based life forms such as Zach slowly kill. Not so much for the opposing side that belongs to Zular.
Now the Monsters of Silence can die. Zular killed a lot of them beforehand, and they have killed each other, but the planet that was once a paradise, is now a hell. The Monsters of Silence consider this as their heaven. Almost completely silent except for the voices of their species, and the wind. Sometimes the slide of a shoe and all of them in the area will home in on the noise and kill it.
But the choices of where to go are rather difficult for a human alone. But since the traveller has one of the shadow creatures to help him at least.
If Zach never went in that bank, then he might have been dead from the stone road. Though Zach does feel like the Monsters of Silence were waiting for him. Why?
Zular looks around warily. "This is one of the few places I haven't been." Zular comments. Zach nods, wanting to ask something, but doesn't. He feels compelled to being silent. It's the only thing he can do well.
If you haven't got it by now, Zach refuses to talk due to the shadow creatures and the marine group he was with a really long time ago at Stone Road. He feels committed, even if the little girl he saved could still be alive...somehow.
There was a loud noise and Zular stops, making Zach stop too.
"Zach, it's an entire crowd!" Zular tells Zach. Zach's eyes grow wide and he gets scared. An entire crowd? That could lead to death for him.
Zach starts to run, and Zular scolds the human in his mind, but dismisses it. Knowing it's what he would do if he were a human.
Zular decides to run with Zach, not risking it for himself either. He doesn't want the traveller to come back for him in the middle. Or to have the knowledge of him working with a thing he's supposed to kill get out.
He worked hard to make it well known he's on top of the rest of them.
After a while, Zular starts searching for Zach again. He's lost the human, which could be bad for both of them.
