Lone Wolf

After a while of searching, Zular gets hungry. It's been a few hours of searching for the creature. He half hopes he never sees the man again. The other half hopes he's alive and still going in the same direction, going towards the same place.

It is just starting to get dark out, and the dark means monsters. The creature looks up to the dark blue sky and whispers quietly; "I hope you're safe, Zach."

The creature shakes his head no and hears a few monsters laughing. Embarrassed, he growls loudly at them. "Stop laughing before I listen to my hunger." He threatens. The small group abruptly stops and stays completely still, waiting for the death bark from the creature.

But Zular is waiting for them to leave, not wanting to waste time on them instead of getting the traveller back. He debates this in his mind. Half of him wants the human dead, while the other doesn't. He growls and starts running along.

The Monsters of Silence almost die of the anticipation from the creature. "I thought he would finish us for sure!" One of the monsters say. The other agrees before jumping over the broken and dull billboard sign from Covergirl and follow the creature.

Zular continues on, following Zach's light blood scent as best he can. It's not easy for him. Especially since it's starting to fade quickly as the sun starts to fall.

Soon the scent will be gone, and if any Monsters of Silence come out to fight him, he might lose the scent completely, as well as hope for finding Zach.

"Hopefully it doesn't come to an end." Zular tells himself as he walks. He looks at the sun at it sets. The sky is golden red that fades to a dark blue. As he walks, Zach's scent gets stronger. Following his instinct for the scent of blood, he gets excited and runs towards it.

Soon he's right by a lake house in the trees, in a hill over the water. The sun hasn't moved much, and it's getting darker still.

The creature realizes what it's mission was. It's eyes stop glowing brightly and the shadows that contain him go more solid than transparent. Zular rushes to the door.

"Blood handprint, am I too late?" Zular asks. Scared. He opened the door, it wasn't closed properly. He goes through the small house, hopefully looking for Zach.

He finds Zach, on the ground, bleeding. His hands are at his ribs to try and stop the bleeding. His bag was thrown to the floor weakly, blood stained where Zach touched it.

Zular whimpers and nudges Zach slightly. Zach groans in pain, and shakes his head no. He gathers enough strength to push Zular's snout away from him.

"I'm sorry I didn't get to you sooner, I wish I had." Zular tells the traveller. Zach smiles weakly and puts his hand on Zular's head.

"It's okay, friend," he struggles to breathe with the pain, "you tried your best to help." Zach forces out. Zular whimpers and lays down next to Zach, sad. It's true, Zular had grown a soft spot for the human.

The creature didn't want the human to go. Zach didn't want to leave the creature or the world. But he was bleeding badly, and already lost a lot of blood. He couldn't do anything besides stay with Zular and hope he doesn't die. Zular can only hope Zach does not die.

"I have...have to admit. You did pretty well, Zular." Zach tells the creature, petting it's head. Zular stays close to Zach. "You aren't too bad yourself." Zular tells him. Zach smiles, "I guess so." He agrees, then cringes from the pain of the deep wound in his side.

"They must have known you were with me, or they would have killed me." Zach tells him. Zular is surprised at how much Zach is speaking, his human only spoke a small sentence and was done with it.

Zular whimpers, now thinking it's his fault. If I never met him, he wouldn't die this slowly. So painfully too.

His other side thinks differently; the human deserves it! You can't kill him, but everything else can! This is a break, Zular! Revenge!

No! I cannot feed into revenge! Zach is my friend, I will do what's best for him! I will not let him die this way!

"Zach, may I kill you quickly?" Zular asks. Zach opens his eyes and looks at the creature. "Yes." He answers, tears flooding his eyes. He's holding back screams of pain as best he can. He doesn't want more Monsters of Silence around.

Zular gets up, if he could cry, he would. But he faces Zach, and takes in a deep breath. Zach gets ready to be dead. Waiting for Zular to do it.

Zular looks at the suffering human, then he takes out his long shadow claws and pierces Zach's heart. The human's days are now over.

Zular whimpers and moves under Zach's arm again. His limp arm and puts Zach's hand on his own head. The creature is loyal to few, and Zach was his best friend. He could barely stand the fact that Zach was dead.

"Why did you leave me? I should have said no! Curse you, Zular! Why didn't you stop him!" Zular yells at himself angrily. He blames it all on himself. He never meant for the human to die! Zach was special to Zular. Special in a way few would understand. Not even he understands it.

Zular puts his head down and gets close to Zach's corpse. The shadow wolf whimpers as he doesn't hear the beating of a heart. Another reminder of death.

The human-no he didn't, Zular! Zach never deserved this! Zular snaps, angered by what the thought would have become. It would have taken over his thoughts, and he would go back to being the killing machine he originally was.

Zular spends a few days living in that lake house with Zach's body, whimpering and hoping that he'll come back. This was a true friendship, even if they didn't want to admit it. It couldn't have gone any better. Nor could it be anymore loving.

Zular gets up and hangs his head as he walks out. He doesn't know what to do now. Zach is gone and after a few months or so, possibly less, he's so used to it. Protecting a human he wanted to kill. Zach was important to the creature more than he knew when the human was alive.

But now... now he feels like there's no other purpose he serves. He had served a purpose with Zach, but now that he's gone, there's nothing else.

"Even if the others didn't know, I still wouldn't be allowed back. I've killed too many for them to not notice." Zular tells himself sadly. The creature wanders around aimlessly in the silence. No monster around to disturb him any further.

"I don't think I can even face any other. Not after what I've done." Zular tells himself. He falls onto his stomach, on some nice green grass, and sighs. Sighs both in relief and sorrow. Sympathy and anger. Frustration and guilt. They all consume him like the light on shadow.

"I shouldn't have left him." He tells himself. He looks at the warm-coloured sky as the sun sets on the horizon of trees and buildings. For the first time, he sees the beauty of it. The reason why Zach would watch the sun set, and the sky as the sun rose.

It also gave him a reason for him to think about Zach.

Zular has no heart, but if he did, it would be shattered into pieces. Shattered and carried off in the winds of death. The winds Zular wishes that would pick him up now. He has no reason now, no obvious purpose.

Zular stops and sits, then sighs. The gentile breeze blowing into his back carries human scent, and voices. He's in no mood though, he's already let Zach down once.

"I can't let him down again. I can't disrespect my friend by eating his own right after his death." Zular growls to himself. He puts his head down and sighs. Unsure what to do.

The shadow wolf gets up and continues his journey to no where. A lone wolf.
