"I survived on scraps," Five mumbled.
"Yeah. Like canned foods or cockroaches," I added.
"Anything I could find." Five chuckled and looked at me. "Y/n, did you ever find twinkies?"
"Yeah. Urgh, they tasted rancid."

"Wait, I thought Twinkies had an endless shelf life," doubted Vanya.
"Yeah. That was a rumour," I explained.
"It's total bullshit," Five hissed.
"I can't even imagine," gulped Vanya.

"You do whatever it takes to survive, or..."
"You die," I called out. Five was being too nice and not being harsh enough about the circumstances we were in and what everyone might have to live through.
"So we adapted."

My spine pricked up and Vanya had widened her eyes in wonder.
"Whatever the world threw at us, we found a way to overcome it."
"We?" exclaimed Vanya. I'm glad she asked the question I was thinking about too.
Five dodged the question and asked, "You got anything stronger?"

Vanya passed us her 'stronger' beverage in her apartment. In my opinion, it wasn't the same strength I had expected but it was bearable. She looked at us in scepticism and her eyes were filled with doubt.
"You think we're crazy."

"No," Vanya stammered. Her fingers started to fiddle with themselves as she continued, "it's just...it's a lot to take in."
"Exactly what don't you understand?" scolded Five. He started to clench his jaw and put his hand, not holding his drink, in his pocket.

"Why didn't you just time travel back?"
Five scoffed and sighed, "Gee, wish I'd thought of that."
I coughed up a laugh but they both stared at me to stop.

"Time travel is a crapshoot. I went into the ice and never acorn-ed." Acorn-ed? Ah, he must finally understand what Reginald was talking about all those years ago. "You think I didn't try everything to get back to my family?"

Vanya nodded lightly and probed, "If you grew old there, you know, in the apocalypse, how come you still look like a kid?"
I mocked, "We told you already. Five must-have gotten the equations wrong." Five walked over to the kitchen counter and gasped.

He was disappointed in himself and poured himself another glass.
"I mean, Dad always used to say that time travel could mess up your mind. Well, maybe that's what's happening?" said Vanya. She glanced at both of us as I walked over to the drink and Five offered to pour my drink. Five released his cup onto the counter.

"This was a mistake. You're too young..." Five took my arm, urging me to drop my cup almost spilling it everywhere.
"Too naive to understand."

"No. Five, y/n...guys, wait." Five hesitated to turn the doorknob and turned around. "I haven't seen you guys in a long time, and I don't want to lose you again. That's all." I peered over to Five. He was rethinking his options. We didn't have anywhere else to go especially this late into the night.

"And you know what, it's getting late-" Vanya must have mind-reading powers. I jokingly thought. "-and I have lessons early, and I need to sleep, and I'm sure you do, too." Vanya walked over to her sofa, grabbed her pillows and blankets and handed them over to us. "Here. We'll talk in the morning again. Okay? I promise. Night."

Vanya almost leaves the room before I call out, "Hey! There's only one sofa. How can we-"
Vanya then leaves the room. I sigh and Five started getting comfy on the couch. "Uh, I'm not sleeping on the floor, Five."
"Well, it's where you're going to have to sleep because we ain't going to share this couch."
"And, why not?"

"Because..."
"Because of what, Five?"
Five remained silent. He laid down and covered his face with a thin blanket. "Get some sleep, y/n. We have a very busy day tomorrow."
I sigh and start to move the small wooden table over to the side to layer my pillows and blanket down. "Are you sure you don't want to sleep down here? It's rather comfortable." I humorously said. He stayed lying down on the couch and I mocked him whilst closing my eyes and drifting off to sleep.
