"Luke!"
I scream his name with the strength within me that isn't already overcome by fear. I am given mixed feelings, fear, anger, sadness. If those punks hadn't have been so focused towards revenge on Trevor, they would have prevented a lot of danger. I had tried the best I could to help them cross over, but it wasn't enough. I should have known not to underestimate Caleb's power. These boys were the best thing that has ever happened to me, and now I was going to lose them forever.
My soul crushes as a see each boy wince in pain bolt, after bolt, after bolt. Luke trying so hard to stay strong, but is unfortunately failing. Alex curled down looking miserably helpless, while Reggie cries after every bolt.
Caleb with a heartless smile across his face. How could one's heart be that empty? He can't handle any kind of innocent teenage boy with power like him. The worst thing is, my strength's gone. Anything I could even try to do wouldn't be enough. Caleb's power washing through me, forcing me to witness the boy's suffering. That is the most painful of all.
I close my eyes.
I gesture my head upward.
Mom.
I knew inside me whatever brought Luke, Alex, and Reggie to me, was my mom's doing. I don't normally do anything like this, but a silently call to the heavens above.
"Please mom, whatever you can do"
"Please, I beg you"
I think hard as tears run down my cheeks. I look up, making eye content with his hazel eyes. If I could get one last glance of Luke's gorgeous eyes.
I though pops into my head. Something my mom used to always say to me.
"An act of love, will always defeat evil."
I don't know if this was my mom's intention or not, maybe just my brain making up stupid assumptions. But I knew what I had to do. I transmit gratitude in my heart.
"Take me instead" I yell, thankfully getting Caleb's attention. As his focus is centered now on me, the boy's jolts start to, in a way, calm down.
"You would be willing to do something like that?" Caleb asked.
"If I did, would you let them go?"
I stare straight into Caleb's eyes as I hear Luke, Alex, and Reggie screaming for me to get ahold of my senses. I knew what I was willing to do would still result in me losing them, however it wouldn't put them through the suffering, but me instead. I look over at the boys.
Reggie, the most lovable person you could ever meet. He's caring, and has never failed to make me laugh. Reggie has been like a brother to me, I couldn't describe how much I would miss him
Alex, smart, strong, empowering, and deep down inside one of the most selfless people in the world. He was a dear friend. Definitely someone I could turn into in need of some help with every-day problems. I don't know what life would be like without him. Or in this case, not life at all.
And finally, Luke. A ghost who actually gotten me thinking of what a relationship between a ghost and a lifer would be like. We relate on so many levels, and he makes me feel happy in the darkest to times. The pain I feel inside, Luke has always comforted in a way of understanding. He has done nothing but make me better in so many ways. Losing him would be losing a chunk of myself.
"Julie, don't be stupid!" Luke cries.
Caleb and his desire to crush souls, seemed to realize the pain in Luke's eyes. He then started doing a mesmerizing thing with his hands. I could see the power coming together at the roof of his palms. As he gets ready to blast whatever he carried straight at me, Luke seems to use the last of his strength to jump in front of me.
Caleb acted startled, but didn't stop. I anxiously grab ahold of Luke's hands as he is being blown away, Alex and Reggie seemingly not going to be far behind.
"What have you done!" I yell in anguish.
"There was no way I would let you do something like that for me" He replied.
Tears start to stream down both of our eyes. It was now starting to get real. I couldn't contain myself, so I fought.
I held on tight and screamed, "NO! I CAN'T LOSE YOU"
Luke grips his hand atop my cheek, as I began to sob.
"Julie, you mean, so much to me and I don't think I could explain how I feel in the time span that we have."
"Please, please no" I mutter under tears.
He places his forehead atop mine and mutters 3 last words before he fades away. His hands slip away from mine as I fall to the floor.
Luke was gone, and there's barely any part of me left.
