Amelia had just come back from her lunch break and was out the back making another coffee when the bell above the front door rang.
Amelia put the kettle down and rushed into the office to see who the first customer of the day was.
What she saw made her stop in her tracks.
A man stood with his back to her, talking to Daniel. He couldn’t have been more than Amelia’s age (whatever age she was now), and his black curls were gelled up in a messy way that appeared beautifully organized. His skin was a rich russet colour and his brown eyes were so dark they were almost black.
Amelia was frozen in place, her mouth hanging open like a fish underwater.
She eventually forced her feet to take one step after another and managed to plaster a smile on her face. She walked over to Daniel’s side and stood at his shoulder whilst he talked to the customer about visiting the house he wanted to buy.
‘Shall we go then?’ Daniel asked the customer, who nodded then looked directly at Amelia.
‘Sure,’ she replied as she followed Daniel back to their car.
They drove in silence for a few minutes.
‘What’s that customer’s name?’ Amelia turned towards Daniel as they entered a residential part of town.
‘Liam Blake,’ Daniel said slowly and almost angrily.
Amelia didn’t understand why Daniel's mouth had become set in an angry line. His knuckles had turned white from gripping the steering the wheel so tight. Daniel became reckless with his driving, exaggerating every move and swerving all over the road.
Amelia, fearing for her life, gripped the edges of her seat with a vice grip until they were parked.
Amelia hurriedly clambered out of the car, only resuming her ladylike posture when she was a safe distance away.
Daniel followed her out of the car and marched off towards the housing without even looking at Amelia, who attempted to run after him but decided that a quick walk was safer in her heels. Amelia caught sight of a shiny new jaguar speeding past them as they walked along, and instantly recognised the gelled up hair.
Liam.
Amelia didn’t understand why her heart had started racing like she was watching a horror movie. Or why her cheeks flushed pink when Liam flashed a perfect smile at him. She decided that it was best to ignore these strange feelings and continue doing the job she had no clue how to do.
Daniel and Amelia were stood in front of gate that opened onto the front path of a small red brick house. There was a gate round the side and the house had three storeys.
Amelia couldn’t help but stare up at the quaint little house that most people would have thought insignificant. This was why she was an estate agent, she realised with a jolt, because there are buildings out there that make you feel this way and I want to find them.
Amelia heard Daniel talking with Liam about the house and its current up keep, but she was lost in the true beauty of this house.
The windows were framed in a mahogany brown and there was a burgundy creeper growing around the front door. The roof was red like the bricks and the front garden had a border of every colour of flower and leaf ever imaginable.
