Senior year was full of surprises for Ricky and Nini.

They were broken up for the most part of junior year due to his failure to say he loved her back. They didn't talk at all for the first half of junior year, and they only started talking again during the second semester due to their shared friends.

The few times they did speak, it was usually a brief convo between the pair that usually lasted for no more than five minutes before it got uncomfortable. Luckily, they ended up finding their way back to one another during the summer.

Ricky had been the one to reach out since he hated not talking to her like they used to. Sure, they sent the occasional text, but it was stale and awkward. He couldn't stand that years of friendship led to this because of him, so he ran up to her doorstep the second night of summer vacation. She was confused why he was there, but let him in when she saw the desperation in his eyes.

They sat down, had a long talk, and reconnected as friends. To no one's surprise, they ended up confessing that they never stopped loving each other a month after they rekindled their friendship. Not too much later, they made it official.

Being with Nini felt like second nature to Ricky. It just always made sense to him. He thinks he's at his best when she's around, and he looks forward to spending their last year of high school together.

He already made plans for all the dates he'd take her on, his promposal, the secret hideouts in the school he could take her to so they could make out, and plenty of other fun activities they could do to make this last year special for the both of them.

So when she pulls him aside two weeks before school starts and tells him she's moving to Colorado until graduation, he feels his world crashing down.

He of course supported her and was extremely proud that she was able to get into her dream school that she had been manifesting to get into since freshman year, however that didn't erase the fact that he was really disappointed they couldn't see one another as much as they wanted to.

She promised she'd spend the remaining days of summer break with him before she had to leave, which brings them to this moment. Tonight was the night before she had to head out to Denver.

Both were trying their best to stay positive and keep smiling through the pain, but it was hard when they knew that in roughly 12 hours they'd be miles apart instead of wrapped in each other's arms.

They both lay on her bed, backs against the headboard with pillows for comfort. His arm was around her shoulder as she cuddled against him. Her right foot was on top of his left one, playing footsies in comfortable silence.

His head was resting on top of hers while she fiddled with the hem of his t-shirt. They usually ended dates in her room just relaxing in peace on her bed, but this time the mood was somber.

They haven't said a word in ten minutes, too afraid of saying the words goodbye even though it was only for a few months. They had just gone without each other last year. It was hell on both ends, but at least they still were down the street from each other.
