---------------------------------

In the car, we pass dozens of ever appearing houses with melting snow in the front lawns, and small robins scrounging for scraps of the past winter.

Only silence rests between us as Millie sticks her fat head out the window, her bright brown eyes eagerly watch other dogs pass by with their owners.

"It sure is warmer than usual," I say to break the silence.

Levi glances in the rear-view mirror, "Sure is," he replies.

Another long pause follows, "Do you know when dad will be back?" I inquire.

"I'm not sure," Levi bluntly answers.

My voice rises, "What do you mean by 'not sure'?!"

He flexes his fingers on the wheel, "Look kid, Erwin needs to talk to you first."

"O-Oh, I see..." My eyes and nose begin to sting, "So nothing new."

"No, nothing new."

Out in the late afternoon sun, only two other cars are parked.

Millie wags her tail as Levi latches the leash onto her deep purple collar, "Let's go, Mills!" Levi announces.

As we venture into the newly paved path, I couldn't help but smile, "It's nice for the county to have done this," I comment, waving a hand over the black tar.

Levi nods, "Yes it is, Thais."

I look up at him, "Can we not discuss dad till we get home?"

"That is what I was thinking."

So, for most of the walk, we enjoy the cool breeze, and the golden field surrounding us, to the loop around a wide pond with ducks living in the clear waters.

At a little bridge with a decorative covering just above, Levi stops in his tracks and kneels down beside Millie

"Alright, I'm letting her off-leash."

I couldn't help but rolls my eyes to the clouds overhead, "If she runs off, I'm unable to go after her."

Levi sighs at my remark, "Well no shit."

Hence, Millie instantly springs into action, her long tail waves as a flag in the whirlwind of excitement.

Over the bridge she pounces, into the taller grass, leaving Levi and me behind.

As Levi opens his mouth to speak, a towering man with crisp blonde hair raises a hand in greeting, with a slightly shorter woman beside him.

"Levi, long time no see!" The woman shouts to us.

My eyes widen, "You know people?"

Immediately, his features twist to a scowl, "Yes, I do, brat."

The man with light facial hair, leans down to my level, "Can I help you?" I ask him.

Instead of speaking, he comes closer and takes a whiff of my scent, satisfied he smirks.

"Mike, leave the poor kid alone," the woman inserts.

"Seems like your tea habits have been rubbing off onto her," Mike states to Levi.

Levi slightly scoffs, "Good, black tea is superior."

"I'm more of a coffee person," the woman says, resting a hand on her chest.

"What about hot cocoa?" I add.

"It's okay if you add some spice," Mike glances to her, "But Nanaba likes liqueur in hers."

Levi glares in my direction, but my lips twitch to a grin.

"Well, we better be going," I insert.

Nanaba extends her hand, which I shake. "It was nice meeting you Erwin's kid, and nice seeing you out and about Levi."

Mike nods, "See you two around."

Leaving us alone now I ask, "So how do you know them?"

"Erwin does, not me," he runs a hand through his hair. "Where is that damn dog?"

"Don't look at me!" As I raise my hand in the air, Levi begins to whistle for her.

Down the path, he curses, with me in tow, and that is exactly how we spent the rest of the afternoon.
