On a warmer day in a wondrous valley, I find myself sitting in the living room with the TV blasting the show Supernatural.
A knock on the door draw my attention, "I'll get it!" I shout up the stairs.
Yet, no replies as I make it to the front door.
Behind the veil, a shorter figure stands with an obvious leather jacket.
My face lights up, "Lani!" I shout as I swing the door wide open.
"Hey kid," She says as she saunters right past me.
I make a small beeline behind her, "Are you forgetting something...?" I ask her as I hold my arms out.
Her flushed cheeks crinkle as she leans in, "Sorry," she murmurs.
As I draw in a breath of air, the scent of lavender and bile fills my lungs, "You've been drinking, again!" I scold her.
She gives me a cheeky grin, "Don't ask, don't tell," she reminds me.
I roll my eyes, "Levi! Lani is here and she is drunk!" I shout up the stairs.
In seconds, the door swings open to reveal a shadow, "Get out!" His deeper voice rumbles across the house, causing the dogs to scatter.
Lani shoots him a glare, "Erwin says that this can be my safe space."
"When you are sober!" Levi corrects her.
"Tch, fine Levi. Just know I got your fucking mail!" She scowls.
She waves a white envelope in the air, with dad and Levi's name written in a scratchy scribble.
I take the letter from her, "Why do you have this?" I ask her.
"Because Levi put me down as a second contact, the first address is based in Chile."
Hearing this, I rip the envelope open to reveal a letter from the adoption agency.
"Dear Smith and Ackerman family," I begin.
"We are excited to tell you that your daughter, Thais Smith has the opportunity to meet her parents in your home state!
The only available date is May 13, for her biological parents to fly out and to meet me," My jaw drops as I read this.
Levi now appears beside me and snatches the letter.
"What the hell?" He mumbles as he pulls out his phone.
"That's great!" Lani cheers as she pull me in for another embrace.
I find myself speechless as the voice of Levi keeps me present.
