The room felt more overbearing than ever. The tall bookshelves and the overly polished moonstone desk were dulled despite their shine. Elvin much preferred the chaos of the forest than the deafening quiet of these four walls.
Unsettling, it was.
It was a quaint room. A desk at the head, two elegantly crafted cushioned chairs in front of it, and a lounge couch by a window. Elvin would often sleep there when spending long nights amongst scrolls and ink.
"WHAT A EXCITING DAY!" A loud bear like voice broke through the silence of the room. The large oakwood doors were flung open as Aaron walked in as chippy as a bird. He strode with heavy steps to the center of the room and flopped down on a long lounging chair. Vibrations spread throughout the room as he rested like a bear resting under the warm sun. "I see you are hiding away in this dreaded chamber again?"
Elvin kept his gaze on the newly spun scroll and continued to scribe. "I have work to do."
"Well, while you sulk away in this room. I had the most wondrous day."
"Marvelous," Elvin grunted sarcastically, "why don't you go and continue to have it outside of my presence." A tint of guilt overcame Elvin. He had no reason to take out his unhappiness on his friend. In fact, he should be bending backward to apologize for what he had to endure to keep the information he had sent him to get.
But he knew what made his day so great. While Elvin had been in his office, trying to regain his command of the army. Aaron had been prancing around the gardens with Aria. Kissing her hand and making her blush. He pushed those thoughts aside before they had the chance to linger. To make him want.
"Aria is such a fine female," Aaron added. His golden eyes watched the prince closely as his hand froze over the scroll. "I find myself enthralled by her beauty."
Elvin let the pen drop from his hand and in a rougher voice than he intended. He asked, "What are you up to, Aaron?"
"Why is everyone under the impression that I am plotting something?" His smirk widden. "Can I not just enjoy my time with her?"
Elvin's silver eyes watched his friend from many years closely. No. He could not just be enjoying his time. There was a reason he was such a great spy. He got a trill off of scheming. "Do not involve her in your schemes." Elvin's voice was laced with warning.
"Me? Never!" Aaron said in outrage, so much so, that anyone would have believed him. Anyone but Elvin. Aaron took out a dagger and began to pick at his nails as he continued to speak with delight. "I have become enthralled by her."
Elvin's lip could not become any thinner as he watched his friend speak into the wind. As if he was a young lad in love.
"Today," Aaron continued, "she created these divine brown sweets. Chocolates! She called them. Left me licking my own fingers." His right eyes turned to Elvin. "Left me wanting to lick more."
Elvin was used to his friend's vulgar way of speaking; oftentimes, it left him laughing. Today, he had no patience for it. "If you have nothing of importance to say, I rather be alone."
"Yes, I actually had something to ask your opinion on."
"And, what is that?"
Aaron straightened on the lounge table. He combed his shoulder-length hair as he stared straight at Elvin. "Well, I have been enjoying her company so much that I was thinking of asking her consort for tomorrow's Spring Solstice celebration."
Elvin's stomach twisted, but he ignored it. "What does my opinion matter. She is not my mate. It is not my business who she lays with."
"I was under the impression that you may be interested in her?" Aaron's eyes searched Elvin's face as if looking for any break in his composure.
