IMPORTANT NOTE: I have changed General Amaria's name to Elora. Will eventually edit earlier chapters.
Elora stood frozen.
A lake turned to crystal solid by the cold winds of time.
There on the bed, shivering in pain, was her child. But she was not sobbing at her side. Not fretting over her well being. She struggled with what to feel. A sense of relief that the physical reminder of her rape could be gone. A deep guilt that she had not been a better mother. She was a terrible one. It should be her dying on the bed. Not Lia. She was just a child. Elora was the monster. A monster that could not learn to love.
The door to the High Sheevra's door burst open, and Prince Elvin and the... THE DAMN HUMAN!
"YOU!" Elora's menacing scream came out rough. Turmoil boiled inside her, rumbling through her voice. It was directed at the cursed human. She stalked forward like a lion intending to kill. Her hand snapped, catching the human by her throat. A sense of control slipped into Elora's mind as she felt the human's pulse weaken under her fingertips.
Aria heaved desperately for air. Her eyes were wide in panic as Elora's fingers threatened to snap her neck. There was murderous intent in her eyes.
"What did you tell her, human?" Elora growled out. Hand tightened around Aria's throat, further restricting the airflow. Years of training had given her a grip of steel. It would not take much for her to snap the human's neck. They were so fragile, after all. She could do it this time. Protect those around her.
Aria struggled to answer. It was a losing battle, to speak with no air.
"Let her go this instant!" Elvin did not move a finger, but his command was resolute and thundered against Elora's ear.
Elora turned to him with fury. At that point, she did not see the prince that she bowed to serve. Or the mighty and deadly warrior he had grown into. But, the young boy she had trained to hold a spear. She wanted to smack him across his cheek for letting this human in. Reprimand him for bringing a poisonous snake into this kingdom. Anything that would allow her to target her anger outward and not within.
"Do not make me punish you for insubordination," were his last words of warning.
Elora did not flinch at the treat. She had taught him to be as such. Determined. Just but unforgiving. Yet, she never expected it to be turned towards her.
Elora's hands unwrapped from the human's throat, allowing her to fall to the floor.
Aria's hand soothed her reddened neck, flinching at the tender flesh. Imprints of Elora's harsh hold marked her neck.
Aria glared at Elora, "what the hell is your problem?" She demanded.
Elvin let out a grave sight and kneeled in front of Aria, offering her his hand. "I hope you will be able to forgive my General. Clearly, she is hasty over her daughter."
Aria's eyes widened at Elvin, and they flashed between Elora and the unconscious Lia. Understanding settled in her eyes. She looked at Elvin, took his hand, and stood.
"If you are done with your squabbles, there are more pressing matters," the High Shveera murmured from across the room. Her hands flowed over the still child.
Lia's face grimaced in pain. A small cry left her lips. Never had Elora seen her so frail.
