She had never seen anyone die before. Her father told her she was death itself.

A knife sent by the evil gods to kill her own mother. Rip her from the inside out. But she was a babe back then. In her castle, her father's prison, she was shielded. Never seen the light slip from someone's eyes.

Was this what death looked like? Was this what she had done to her mother?

Lia's ebony skin dulled, and her eyes fogged. She was slipping away.

A dark feeling cascaded over Aria at the sight. She knew what she needed to do.

Aria seized Elora's head. Firm fingers forced her shocked face to hers. "Listen. You must do as I say. First, mix the two liquids. Wait until the mixture turns yellow, then add the powder little by little. If it thickens too much, it will not work. Then add the crushed flowers into the concoction."

"What?" Elora asked. Snot dripped from her nose down the crevice of her lips as she screamed. She had shattered in an instant. Broken into pieces. And fallen apart.

"Make sure you don't get the order wrong," Aria instructed.

Aria hoped she wouldn't, her very life would depend on it.

Aria's hand shook as it hovered over the wound. Dread pricked her fingers. The purple and black swirls spread all the way to Lia's slender neck. The stench of death and rotting flesh invaded Aria's nose.

A small breath escaped Aria's lips. She felt it—a spark in her fingertips— pure energy breaking through her bones. It raged, defiant of the dark, clutching claws that tighten around the back of her neck.

Light radiated from Aria's hands and Lia's wound. It connected them. A bridge of light that allowed the poison to leak out of Lia and into her. Lia's spent breath evened as Aria began to gasp. An exchange of life.

A deep pain penetrated Aria's fingertip as the poison entered her. Fire spread through her veins.

Aria screamed, but she did not stop. She choked. The air in her lungs was too hot, burning her inner walls. Her eyes fogged. Yet, they remained on the deep and purple mark.

Against the tightness in her jaw, Aria smiled. The darkness that plagued Lia's skin disappeared.

Rotting dark marks branded their way across Aria's fingers. Like the sharp edge of a sword, they trailed up fingers. She gasped and clawed at her arms—anything to dig out that burning pain. But the more she scraped, the more it burned.

Elvin's pulse throbbed at the unfolding events. When the human placed her hands over Lia, the realization of what she intended to do hit him.

His feet were nailed to the ground. If Aria did as she planned, she would die. He knew what that poison did to humans. It would burn her alive from the inside out— until there was nothing there. She would be far gone by the time General Elora completed her instructions for the potion. But, If he intervened, Lia would die.
