"How the freak are you supposed to slash, dodge, and do all that other sh*t at the same time? I can't even do one right!" I complain. I'm playing Kenma's new game on his Switch that's apparently very popular nowadays.
We are on a bus heading to Metropolitan Tokyo for Nationals and I decided to sit next to Kenma in the hopes of having a very chill ride there. Seeing Kenma struggle and get frustrated with his game, I had been joking when I asked for a try. Surprisingly he had handed me the console and so I had no choice but to give it a shot. It became apparent in about 0.2 seconds that I definitely do not have a future in professional gaming.
"I think you just killed yourself," Kenma says.
"Huh, how do you even manage to do that? It's kind of impressive if you think about it," comments Tora, who was watching from over the seat behind us.
"Ehh?? What kind of a compliment is that!" I say, flustered. I hate not being good at things but there was no way I was going to improve with this game. I hand the Switch back to Kenma and sulk for a bit.
I hear a snort next to me and see it comes from Kuroo. "PinkU-san, you really remind me of your owl boyfriend when you get upset like that."
"Huh, what do you mean?" I ask, genuinely confused."You don't know? Whenever Bokuto isn't playing well, he'll get super upset or depressed so Akaashi won't set to him until he picks himself up. It's his infamous emo mode."
Yaku joins in on the conversation, saying, "Ah, yeah I do remember from camp seeing he looked really droopy during some games when he wasn't playing as well as he usually does."
"Oh.. I never saw this side of him. He always played well against you guys," I reply.
"Uhuh, he played harder against us compared to when he played the other teams," Kuroo says. "I really wonder why. Ahem, cuz of you, ahem."
I roll my eyes at his comment but I'm kind of curious to see Bokuto's emo mode. I'll ask Akaashi about it when we get to Metro Tokyo since I'm sure he has a whole encyclopedia in his head about the ace.
We arrive at our destination about a half hour later. The hotel we are staying at isn't super bougie but it's very comfortable and close to the main gym where we will be playing at. Everyone takes their stuff with them as we check into our rooms. Coach tells us to get situated first and meet in about an hour to go over logistics and start doing light practice drills. Most of the guys have paired up in twos and threes but being the only female, I get to have a room all to myself.
I dropped my things on a chair and jump onto the large bed. Ahh, the life a nice, comfortable bed gives me. Lying on my back, I close my eyes for a second, enjoying being alone for a bit. I then grab my phone and text Bokuto, 'Hey, we made it! We're staying at the Marryott, hbu?'
A second later he replies, 'Hey hey hey! Glad you got there safely. And oh! You guys are really close to us! We're down the street at the Hyacht.'
'Nice! Do you wanna meet up real quick? I've got an hour to spare,' I text back.
Bzz. 'Sorry, baby. I got to practice right now but I'll text you later tonight! I can't wait to see your beautiful face!'
Oof that's a bummer. I reply, 'That's ok! Do your best, ttyl~'
I sigh. I guess this is the life of having an ambitious top ranked volleyball boyfriend. Oh well. Regardless I'm super excited to get to see him again in person.
We only have the practice gym reserved for an hour before other teams get to use it so Nekoma uses the time wisely, not sparing a second. I can tell they're all excited to play but there's also a cloud of nervousness surrounding them, which is completely normal except it affects me that much more seeing them so much calmer and quieter than usual. Good thing I made sure to bring my sleeping pills or I wouldn't be able to sleep the entire time we were here.
After our hour is up, we go to the common area of our hotel for a long team meeting discussing our power plays as well as the strategies of our opponent, Sarukawa Tech. Apparently, Coach Nekomata's former pupil is coaching that team so he's probably familiar with Coach's way of teaching and his tactics. This puts a little stressor an us, but it's nothing we can't combat. Before it gets too late, Coach dismisses us so we can get a good night's rest for our first game tomorrow. Doing one final huddle, we split to our rooms.
By the time we do so, it's dark outside and such a pretty night it is! I can't just stay in my room now so I grab my coat and decide to take a stroll outside. There's a park across the street so I go there and start walking along the trail on its perimeter.
I've never been to this part of Tokyo before but it's really a sight. Not too many cars are around and the buildings and little shops along the street are beautiful, unlike anything that's in America. I'm enjoying the scenery and my surroundings when I hear the crunch of footsteps behind me. I turn around, but no one is in my direct line of sight. Huh, that's weird. I could have sworn I heard something. Frowning, I turn back around and continue walking on, but an uneasiness creeps over me.
Crunch, shuffle. I whip around, much faster this time. No one.
Ok, this is getting really sketch and there's no pedestrians around me so I start fast walking away from the park and towards the buildings on the opposite side of the hotel. My anxiety kicks in as I walk, walk faster, jog, then sprint around the corner... and right into a dark alleyway. Not my smartest move.
Welp, I think to myself. This is it, this is where I die. I'm sorry God for any wrong I have done.
I hear that crunching sound and look towards where I entered the alley. Still nobody is there, and for a second I take a deep breath and slowly let it out. It's just nerves, I tell myself. You're not dying tonight, you're just anxious about tomorrow's match.
While I try to reassure myself, however, a pair of arms encompass me from behind. I'm so shocked that I can't move, let alone scream. This sh*t only happens in horror movies, why out of all people is this happening to me??
But then the person's grip on me loosens and I feel a kiss on my neck and hear a whisper in my ear. "Hey hey hey, baby."
"Kotaru! Holy crap, you scared me half to death!" I exclaim, turning around.
He laughs wholeheartedly. Oh how I missed that sound and for a moment I forget that I'm mad at him.
"Sorry, I just had to! I saw you walking around and wanted to surprise you."
"Well, you definitely surprised me. I thought you were a serial killer." I reply. I definitely need to stop watching true crime shows late at night.
"Hehehe, so you gonna cheer me on tomorrow?" he then asks.
I had looked at the schedule and saw that Fukurodani's match was an hour after Nekoma's begins.
"I'll try to make as much of it as possible. Depends on when we end though," I tell him.
He looks a little disappointed but then perks up. "Well, as long as you can come at some time. You'll be able to see me beat the other team to a pulp, hey hey hey!"
"Alright, then if you're gonna do that, better get all the rest you can tonight." I say. Touching his face, I add, "I really missed you."
"I missed you too." He pulls me into a long, deep kiss. We then walk hand in hand to my hotel where he drops me off and goes on his way.
