AND THE BLACK JACKALS ARE AT SETPOINT!! CAN THEY FINISH IT OFF AGAINST THE ADLERS WITH THIS NEXT SERVE??
The commentators are as loud as always, something my eardrums never really quite got used to. The score is 2-1 Black Jackals, and they're so close to winning. I twist my ring around my finger, a new habit I picked up that I do when I get nervous.
Atsumu serves the ball and it gets received by the Adlers' libero. Kageyama sets it and the giant of a hitter named Ushijima slams it onto the other side of the court. Ugh! A tie again 25-25.
"Oh, god dammit! Just one more point, please please for f*ck's sake-" I curse in English.
"You better not be cussing in front of a child," a voice interrupts me. I turn around and see Kuroo walking towards me. In his arms is a tiny three-year-old girl with long black hair in pigtails and golden eyes.
To him I reply, "Ha ha, who do you even think I am? I never curse. Also, thanks for watching Akari while I was at the clinic. Today was a lot longer than I expected but I'm glad I was able to make the last set."
I take my daughter from him and he says, "Of course. I still find it crazy that gynecologists work Saturdays but I'm always down to hang out with the little princess. And it's good practice for when Sakura and I become parents which by the way is coming up soon."
"Yes, I know exactly what date your wife is due. I'm her doctor, just to remind you." I say sarcastically. To Akari, I ask, "Did you have fun with Uncle Kuroo?" She nods enthusiastically and says, "Akari loves Uncle Kuroo!"
We go back to watching the game just in time to see Hinata spike it into the corner on the Adlers' side of the court. 25-24 blares on the scoreboard.
"WOO!!" I cheer with Akari and Kuroo. One more point to win the game.
Sakusa serves this time right at Kageyama who receives it up. My heart beats at a hundred miles per hour when it gets set to Ushijima again. He slams it down and ... the ball goes up! Black Jackal libero, Inunaki, received it! Atsumu sidesteps and sets it up.. BAM! Bokuto spiked it down the line past three blockers.
FF-WHEEE FF-WHEE!!
THEY'VE DONE IT! THE BLACK JACKALS HAVE BEATEN THE SCHWEIDEN ADLERS TO TAKE THE #1 SEED IN THE LEAGUE!!
The Black Jackal fans go completely crazy and cheers go off deafeningly.
"Akari, Daddy won them the game!!" I say excitedly to my child. She laughs and cheers along, saying, "Yayyy, Daddy!!"
"I'm gonna go down there," I tell Kuroo. "Want to come with?"
He smiles but shakes his head. "Nah, go have your little family reunion. I'm good watching from up here. I'll meet up with you all after."
I give him a squeeze of gratitude on the arm and head down the stairs. Carefully maneuvering through the crowd while carrying Akari, I make my way finally to Bokuto's side. I congratulate all his teammates, all of whom know and are familiar with me like extended family.
"DADDY!" cries Akari. She struggles out of my grasp and runs to him, who picks her up and throws her up and down in the air.
"Hey, hey, hey, how's my little girl? Did you see how your dad just killed it?" he smiles ear to ear. He then looks at me extending his arm for a hug. I oblige even though he's wet with sweat but I don't care. He kisses me deeply, saying, "Hey, baby. Thanks for making it. I love you."
"I love you too, tiger." I reply, giggling like a teenager. Somehow, even after almost a decade, Bokuto was the same and could still make me feel butterflies like when we first started dating.
Who could've thought that accepting a high school volleyball manager position would eventually lead me here? As I watch my husband and daughter laugh together, I thank god that I had said yes to it. This is my amazing life now and I couldn't be happier.
