54. She fessed

'What?'

James was confused, as he looked down at the girl who looked like she was either ready to sleep or conquer the world. But moreover he was confused that Rae hadn't just stomped to his house, she had even replied to his confession.

And not in a way he'd imagine.

'What do you mean by what?' Rae asked, stubbornly. Her hands folded across her chest, her eyes glaring at the tall confused man. 'I just told you, twice.'

James opened his mouth and then shut it again, like a fish, unable to speak. He was stunned because he didn't think of this possibility at all. The more confused he was, the more infuriated Rae was getting.

'Say something, will you?' She asked, her heartbeats thumping in both adrenaline and nervousness.

Rae looked at James, hoping he'd say something, but James was only frozen, unable to form words. He then opened his mouth, trying to contemplate what he should retaliate with but a burning smell diverted his attention.

'My brownies.' He said, as they both scrunched their noses, eyeing the little cloud of smoke coming from the kitchen. James rushed towards the kitchen, as Rae sighed, entering in and shutting the door behind her.

She can't believe that his first words after her confession was about his burnt brownies.

Rae walked in the kitchen, where James was looking down at his smoking hot brownies with a sad gaze. She furrowed her brows, wondering what was wrong.

They were just brownies.

She looked at the tall man, dressed in his comfortable t-shirt and track pants, his hair for some reason always tucked. James kept his blank gaze at the brownies, deep in thought as Rae walked closer.

'Everything okay?' She asked, tilting her head, her hands still folded and eyes on him. 'We can always make a new batch?' She offered, not knowing why James was so stunned by his burnt brownies.

'You mean it?' He asked, still looking down at the hot burnt brownies.

Rae nodded, unsure of what was happening. 'Yea, we can always make brownies...'

'Not that.' James cut her off, now facing her. 'Do you really love me?'

Their eyes met, and Rae gulped, for the first time she could glance at those deep dark eyes and find so much of warmth. His almost teary eyes held so many emotions, it was hard for her to out them. From surprise, to confusion, from hope to love, those black eyes were radiating everything she was feeling.

'Yes.' She took the final step towards him, her hand holding onto his and firmly clutching it. 'I mean it. I really do.'

James eyed her hand on his, slowly entwining fingers with hers and he took a step closer. It was impossible for this girl to never look pretty, because she was in an oversized sweater over her baggy pants, her hair left open, and her tired face holding a smile.

To James, she was an angel.

Rae's heart steadied, when James entwined their fingers, interlacing them and inching closer. But he didn't cross the line, she knew he wouldn't because last time he did, she said things which were messy and untrue.

'I know, I messed up.' She spoke softly, James wasn't looking at her, anywhere but her and she gulped. 'I said things I didn't mean. I still have decisions to take but in all this, I cannot keep denying what we have, or had. To be honest, I got scared of losing my friendship and told you things which weren't true.' She confessed, her other hand on his arm, 'And now I got scared of losing you, or what we could have. And I realized I don't want to lose either.' She gulped, feeling teary-eyed as she looked down at her feet. 'I don't know what is going to happen, but I do know that I'm going to atleast throw a fight you know...'
