EVENING RUSH HOUR really wasn't a thing at Luke's diner. The last few customers were finishing off cups of cold coffee and Jess Mariano was planning which album he was going to listen to tonight, as soon as Luke let him finish his shift that was. There was no doubt he was going to head straight upstairs and play his most angsty and angriest record on the highest volume possible just to piss everyone off.
Whilst everyone told Jess that he would adjust to life in Stars Hollow, he'd decided otherwise. Jess was adamant that nothing on Earth could warm him up to the crazy crack-land he'd been dumped in. There was a slim chance that would ever change, Jess had made up his mind before he'd even got on the bus from New York. Jess Mariano was loyal to his own ideologies and nothing would change that.
Not even Rory Gilmore could make him actually like Stars Hollow.
He's surprised everyone yet mainly himself when he'd begun to spend more time with her by choice. He wasn't really sure what it was, maybe it was because she was so smart and not like every other dumb blonde who threw themselves at him (not that he thought every blonde was like that, Jess was ironically against stereotypes). They'd only spent about half an hour actually together so there was plenty of time for her to disappoint Jess and sadly he completely expected that.
However he still wanted to hang out with her. It could have been the fact that Rory thought he was good, not the irritating bad boy everyone else deemed him to be. He wasn't sure if she just saw good potential and wanted to change him or generally thought he was good — Jess severely hoped it wasn't the former of the two options.
Maybe his rebellious tendencies simply had gone so haywire that he wanted to prove even himself wrong.
The bell that hung above the diner door tinkled as it opened.
"Evening Jessica." Phoebe Delgado greeted, a slouchy smirk on her rouge lips. She had a green tote bag swung across one shoulder and her headphones in her ears.
Jess let out a forced and overly-dramatic groan as she entered and settled down on one of the stools at the counter. "Don't call me Jessica. That's weird." He said as he hit Phoebe on the head with a wet towel he'd been using to wipe tables.
"Gross." Gruntled Phoebe.
The hands on the clock ticked to half ten. "What are you doing here this late anyway? We're closing up you know." Jess stated.
"Holden wasn't home." Muttered Phoebe, her eyes flickering down to her fingers which began to play with her bracelets. "I mean Harry, loves to be difficult he does." She quickly added, whispering under her breath sarcastically, the name still slightly foreign on her tongue. "Told Luke I'd come by and see if you needed help anyway."
