All of a sudden she woke up and sat up. She started gasping aggressively for air as her hand rested on her chest. Then she rubbed her eyes quickly while also wiping away the few tears she had for some reason. After calming down a bit, she closed her eyes and rubbed her temples. The dream she just had made her have a big effect on her, but she didn't understand why. She opened her eyes and looked around the glade disoriented.
It's just a dream right? It has to be...
But...
WCKD? What even is that?
Guards, computers, screens, Thomas, Teresa... what did they all have in relation? Why were they in my dream?
She kept repeating words, phrases and questions to herself, with no explanation found. So she tried to convince herself she was just overreacting.
She took a deep breath and sighed. Coming back to the present world she looked around once again and her mind finally recognized the area. Everyone was still asleep, and it seemed like there was left one more hour for the sunrise. She scratched her head and decided to not go back to sleep. It'd just made her even more confused and she wouldn't be able to, anyways. She packed her sleeping bag and decided to go take a shower to clear her mind before Newt would come looking for her to start the MedJack job.
She turned on the hot water and stepped inside the shower. She let her hair get wet as her mind was still trying to the decipher the dream. She rested her head on the wall for a few seconds and then proceeded to clean herself.
She finished her shower and put on the same baggy clothes. She went near one of the enormous walls that surrounded them and cut a vine that was hanging from it. She proceeded to make a messy bun and helped it stay by tighting it with the vine. The sun wasn't going to come up until a few more minutes.
She decided to head to the barn and visit the animals which their life's purposes was to be eaten. She felt bad for them, but she needed a distraction away from the strange dream. When she got there she decided to walk closer to a cow. She reached her hand onto the animal's head and she tapped it lightly. The cow seemed to like her, since it was closing its eyes peacefully while y/n pet her. She wasn't scared since the wooden fence separated them and in case something happens she could run. Cows were inoffensive anyway. She took some leaves from the grass and gave it to the animal. The cow accepted it and started consuming it.
"I'm sorry, you do not deserve to be eaten" y/n said sighing and petting it a bit more. She looked around the barn and saw more animals such as pigs and chickens.
"What else do you suggest we feed 60 hungry and angry boys then?" Newt said coming out of nowhere. Y/n jumped and stepped back because of the sudden appearance and took her hand to her chest.
"Jesus! You scared me. I don't know, fruits? Vegetables?" She said raising her eyebrows sarcastically to him.
"That won't give them enough protein. They need the meat" he said with a raspy morning voice and then laughed. Before she could speak, the cow mooed loudly as in response to what Newt said.
"She disagrees with you" y/n said giggling. Newt walked closer to the cow and petted it just like her. She looked at him and for some reason, felt comfort. The sunrise was setting in in the background and the beautiful light pink and orange colors in the sky made contrast with Newt. Plus his morning voice was... nice. And the fresh air and light sunlight made the morning peaceful.
"You woke up early this time?" He said yawning and signing her wet hair.
"Couldn't sleep" she said shortly and quickly trying to avoid the topic so she wouldn't have to talk about the dream. It was pointless... and she wasn't ready for it anyways. "Isn't it intriguing how these evil people send us to such a horrible place surrounded by a maze but manage to send us living animals?" She said looking around at all the animals in the barn again.
Newt laughed while rubbing his eyes. "Definitely. One day I'd like to face those assholes and make them answer every single question" he said leaning on the fence and looking down to the ground. She smiled weakly as in response. There was nothing she could say to make feel anyone better about the situation they were currently in.
They stayed silent for a few minutes while y/n petted more animals and Newt closed his eyes smelling the fresh morning air. It wasn't awkward at all. The company they made to each other was great... and they didn't even know each other fully yet.
"We should go have breakfast before we head to the homestead and keep an eye on Ben" Newt said breaking the silence. Y/n nodded. "Okay"
Newt started walking down to the kitchen and for the first time she noticed something she didn't see since she got there.
Newt limped.
Slightly, but noticeably.
How could she have missed that? Would it be wrong if she asked him why? She stared at him walk for a few more seconds and shook her head. She thought to herself he probably got hurt and immediately felt bad. She turned to her new cow friend. "Goodbye" she said smiling to the animal and started walking right behind Newt.
As they walked to the Kitchen she saw the walls opening. She tried to look for Thomas since the dream left her with so many doubts, but there was no track of him. She sighed and returned to look at her pathway.
"Frypan!" Newt said bumping his fist with the cooker on the Kitchen.
"Morning early birds" he said laughing. "There's the food, you can grab a plate and serve yourself" he said. Y/n turned to the (kinda) buffet that was in a large table. The food was ready to feed all the gladers, but newt and y/n were the first people there and everything was freshly done.
Newt grabbed a plate and served himself scrambled eggs, bacon, and some pancakes.
Y/n wasn't usually hungry so early in the morning so she grabbed a plate and only put two pancakes.
They both headed to a table and sat together.
"Are you not hungry?" Newt said chuckling and signing her plate with his fork.
She rolled her eyes and laughed "Not that much" she said.
"Your pancakes look miserable" he said with that british accent y/n started to like a lot.
"Shut up" She threw him a napkin shaped in a small ball and then pretended to be offended, but then laughed with him.
"You're not wrong though, they're actually miserable. I have an idea" she said and then stood up and went to the kitchen where Fry was.
"Hey did Zart yesterday bring new fruit crops?" She asked the cooker.
"What if he did?" He raised his eyebrows. Frypan didn't usually like people robbing his kitchen. It meant everything for him.
"Oh come on I'll just take a few strawberries... please?" She said smiling and leaning her head gently in her shoulder. He sighed and then pointed to a box that was in the back where she would find the fruits. She thanked him and then went to take a few red berries and strawberries. She was happy with what she got, but she knew she was missing something. She looked to her left and saw that Fry was distracted cooking more bacon while talking Newt. So she quickly looked around the kitchen's pantry and found honey. Perfect she thought to herself. She didn't understand how they could even have that product since she hasn't seen bees around The glade, but just hoped it wasn't expired. She walked back to the table where her and Newt sat a few minutes ago.
"Close your eyes" she said while sitting on her chair.
"What? Why?" Newt said confusingly.
"Please?" She asked. He sighed and closed his eyes while smiling.
She quickly grabbed Newt's pancakes with her fork and placed both of his on top of hers. Then she cut the strawberries and berries in small pieces and put them on top of the pancakes. Finally she grabbed the honey and then poured a coat of it around the whole plate. As she did all that, Newt kept eating his breakfast with his eyes closed confused on what the girl was doing.
The plate looked beautiful to her. She nodded in approvement to herself and closed the lid of the honey.
"Simply beautiful" she said. With her fork she cut a piece of the now decorated pancakes and grabbed a berrie too.
"Here" she said handing him the fork so he could taste them. Newt grabbed the fork and put the food in his mouth. He slowly opened his eyes and contemplated the fork where the piece of pancake used to be.
"Alright that was actually bloody delicious" he said raising his hands up in sign of respect to y/n's artwork.
"Thank you. Chef y/n at your service" she said and grabbed her imaginary Chef hat and put it down.
They both laughed and kept eating the rest of their breakfasts.
While she grabbed a piece of pancake for herself, she looked up and stared at Newt while he wasn't noticing. She found cute his puffy face since he had just woken up. His messy hair made him look even better. And the way she could just joke around with him whenever made her feel... happy, safe. She met a lot of people in The glade since her first appearance but if there was one guy she thought she could trust, it was him. It was only her second morning on the area and she was already thinking nonsense. She shook her head. Newt was probably like that to everyone; nice. That's what made him co-leader. Of course, she thought.
She was lost in all that wave of overwhelming feelings that she hadn't noticed Frypan was now sitting with them. He was talking to Newt.
"... this is all fucked up" Frypan said. Y/n turned back to reality and realized she missed a whole important conversation.
"What is?" She said shyly hoping the guys wouldn't get mad she wasn't listening.
"Since the last time you came, no new resources have come up on the box" Newt said and then took a big sip of his orange juice.
"What? Jesus I didn't know that" she said taking her hand to her mouth surprised.
"I know you're new to this and we're sorry you have to adapt so fast, but things are happening we don't understand" Frypan said while sighing. "We need them. We have provisions for two weeks I think... but I don't know how else we will survive".
"Let's hope they forgot to bring them" Newt said, even trying to convince himself. "We'll see".
Frypan nodded and stood up going back to the kitchen. Newt and y/n ate the left pancakes that were on the shared plate. They cleaned up and headed to the homestead.
