The past mistakes do not define me, but
They made me who I am today. And I
Do not regret a sole decision made.
Though I was quite the innocent, he took
It all away. He brought me to a world
Of promise, yet a world still full of lies.
He taught “love,” but forgot to teach himself.
I tried to please, but ‘twas not meant to be
He was too hard to please. And I was not
The one he needed, he held close. His grip
Grew ever tighter. I could not escape.
Few nights I laid in hold of happiness.
I may be young, but I have known the pain
Of broken feathers on bird of prey.
False moves incurred his wrath. With one
Soft sigh he stole my laugh. And then with one
Mistake he took away my life. And then
I took a stand. “No more.” I pledged. “No more.”
It is my choice to “love” and is my choice
To leave. Mistake or not, I am now freed.
