"He puts on an fake heartfelt smile as he plots his new comrades downfall"

*****

At first the group was confused by my sudden change of tone but decided I was just grateful and wanted to thank them over a meal. I didn't waste any time starting up a conversation to find out more about them. The information I collected would prove very useful in the future. The leader's full name was Elwin Dasyra. He was one of the strongest in the kingdom as well as the wisest. So naturally he was curious about how I had been able to take him by surprise so easily but I played it off as luck. Although he still seemed sceptical, he dropped the topic.

The elf who had explained the situation to me was Kolvar Krisqen. He could be described as not a very social person but was very aware of his surroundings. He could be called a right hand man for the leader although he was very independent and wasn't what you'd call a team player. Him was probably the strongest in the group only second to the leader. I would have to be careful of him.

The elf who had a very short temper was called Almer Valyra. He was probably the most annoying of his group. He acted like a spoilt nobles child and would make a scene when things didn't go his way. Although he acted like a noble, I was certain he had not bought his way into the royal guard. He had strong skills although it was clear he couldn't control them well. Elwin had said he was an apprentice that he had taken in.

The other apprentice he took was the female elf who tried to shield Rae from me. Her name was Lyra Farqen. She had a good amount of strength but it wasn't anything special. She was polite and kind but didn't really have any special qualities to qualify to be in the special unit. Despite this I could sense something about her I couldn't quite explain. This bothered me. I didn't trust her.

The human was a boy that was travelling with them. His name is Alan Lowe. Although he had no strength he is very knowledgeable. He was no older than 16 and had a very timid shy personality. He was very easy to read and seemed to always be curious about the new things he learnt.

Rae loved him. She asked him lots of questions and unlike most people she seemed to not mind getting close to him because he had absolutely nothing to hide. Although humans were known for their cunning plots, since I didn't sense any threat from him I decided it would be ok for Rae to be around him.

I had found this all out by the end of lunch. Since they had served their purpose I was about to say my goodbyes and be on my way but Elwin stopped me.

"I actually have one more thing I want to talk to you about but.." His gaze turned to Rae. What could he want to talk about that he didn't want Rae to hear? Lyra seemed to know what he meant to say and spoke up.

"I can look after Rae while you to talk if you want." She said looking at me. I frowned. I still didn't trust this elf and I would feel very uncomfortable if she was the one to look after Rae. So instead I looked at Alan.

"No that's fine. Alan can you look after Rae for me?" I asked him. He smiled.

"Of course! I would love to spend more time with Rae." He told me. It seemed those two had gotten much closer than I had first thought. Rae was excited too.

"Let's go comrade Alan. We must quickly get to the next mission destination." Rae said still in character from the army game they were playing before. Alan stood up and put Rae on his shoulders.

"Yes commander Rae. I'll escort you to the next destination quickly." Alan said while walking outside. Rae giggled in excitement. I smiled at their silliness. I might just get jealous.

Now that they were out of the room the leader spoke.

"Killian, I have seen your skills. Getting past a team of elites and then holding a knife to the leader of those elites is no easy task. You've got talent." Elwin complimented me.

"Thank you for your kind words." I said slowly. What was he trying to say?

"We are actually on a mission to recover a magical device. It's something that demons need but it somehow fell into our hands so we're going to retrieve it and hopefully figure out a way to destroy all evidence of it. I think your skills could help us with that." He explained briefly. I raised my eyebrows in surprise. It seemed after all these years the Goddess was finally on my side.

"Oh? Why would you destroy something that belongs to the Vokya Kingdom?" I asked, faking a confused tone. Ah these people were fools. Were they seriously planning on inviting a complete stranger on an important mission?

"I can't go into too much detail unless you agree to take part in the mission." He said as if he was sure I would give into my curiosity. He had thought he was being smart but he'd actually just invited an enemy into his base. This was just too funny.

"Fine. I'll go with you on this mission but on one condition." I said with a sly smile on my face. It seemed this group would be easier to use then discard than I first thought.

"What condition?" He asked. It would be a pain if too many of his superiors knew I was involved in this mission since they might figure out my identity.

"I don't want anyone to know I'm involved in this for personal reasons." Although he seemed a bit unsure about my request but then nodded his head agreement.

My words made sense. Who would want anyone to know their involvement in a mission where if you were to get caught you could become a target of the Vokya Kingdom. It's the perfect excuse.

"Well it's a pleasure to be working with you." I said with a polite smile. What a pity. They didn't know the moment they even thought of inviting me on their mission was the moment they sealed their fate of pain and misery. Well I guess it's got nothing to do with me. As long as they played their part well as my pawns I didn't care what cursed fate awaited them.
