Chapter 12

“Matt. Can I talk to you please?” Ava asked as she stood up. Matt looked around the room at the people he trusted with his life. He nodded quickly before he got up and followed her out of the room. He followed her up the stairs and didn’t stop until they reach her room. He closed the door as he stepped through.

“I’m going to give her what she wants” were the first words out of her mouth since they got to her room. Matt spun not sure he heard her correctly.

“Ava,” he started cautiously. “We can get him back. We can find him. You don’t have to do this.” She just shook her head and he saw the sad little smile on her lips. He quickly moved over to her and grabbed her shoulders. Ava looked up and met his gaze. What he saw in her eyes made his heart swell and also scared him a little bit. She wasn’t planning on coming back alive. He swallowed nervously as he looked into her beautiful brown eyes.

“What are you planning Ava?” he asked unable to hold back his curiosity. She tried smiling up at him but it didn’t quite reach her eyes. Then without warning Ava started spouting out a plan that was so well thought out he couldn’t believe she’d only thought of it ten minutes ago.

“What about the others?” he asked, as they sat on her bed talking over the plan. He watched as Ava swallowed, searching for the right words.

“The real surprise on their part will be good. And it’s better if they don’t know until you have Mason. If they take it to heart tell them I made you do it.” She took a breath and stopped talking.

“You know they all love you too much to blame you.” Matt said after a moment silence. Then he heard one of the greatest sounds the world could offer. He heard Ava laughing. Suddenly her arms were around him and she was hugging him. He could only hug her back and cherish this moment of almost complete happiness, knowing that in less than five hours he wouldn’t know if he would ever see her again. They pulled apart and Matt couldn’t stop the single tear that slid down his face. Ava saw it and promptly swept it away as her own tears started to fall down her face. Without thinking Matt pulled her on to his lap and started kissing her; her neck, her lips, and her face. He couldn’t get enough. When he heard a giggle coming from her mouth he pulled back smiling. He felt her hands cup the sides of his face as he stared into her eyes. Then she pulled him down and their lips only just touched.

“I’m gonna miss you Mattie.” She said against his lips.

“I’m gonna miss you more Ava.” He said as he slowly pulled her in for another passionate kiss. When they came up for air Matt glanced at the clock. They had ten minutes before the wicked witch of the west herself would be calling back. He gave her one more, quick kiss as they stood and moved out to the lounge room. They didn’t even think to check their appearance. The moment they stepped into the room Holly was on her feet and looked towards them. Matt looked towards Ava at Holly’s shocked expression. Her eyes were red and slightly puffy. They knew she had been crying. He guessed he didn’t look much better.

“What did you do to her?” Holly asked as she came and ran over to Ava.

“I didn’t do anything.” Matt said innocently. As he avoided the punch she threw at his shoulder before moving to comfort Ava.

“It’s not his fault.” Ava said as she accepted Holly’s hug. Holly just pulled back and looked Ava in the eyes. Matt saw indecision cross holly’s features before she nodded and moved away, back into the Lounge room and sat back down on the arm chair she recently vacated. With her decision seemingly made everyone followed suit and returned to their seats.

Two minutes later the screen on the laptop lit up as it came to life. Just like the last time the screen was mostly filled with the silhouette but the background was still the same; dark, dank and dungeon like. Ava swallowed nervously. Taking a deep breath she closed her eyes. She let all of her nerves go and sat up straight as she turned from the Ava that was scared and afraid, to the Black ops trained Ava who was fierce and not afraid of anything. Especially not some has been Commander who had got on the crazy train a few decades back.
