Chapter 6

Ava woke to the smell of bacon and eggs wafting up the stairs. She threw back the warm covers and looked at the clock. It was just past six o’clock. Ava stretched her tired sore body before rolling out of bed and heading into the bathroom for a shower. When she stepped out of the shower, into the steam filled bathroom, she could distinctly smell something burning. Quickly she threw on a pair of jeans, a t-shirt and ran down stairs. As she ran into the kitchen she saw Mason and Joy standing over her stove looking at something in a frying pan on top.

“What happened?” she asked as she stepped into the smoke filled kitchen.

Mason turned to look at her and said “too much fat from the bacon. The flame jumped and the fat caught fire.” He said it like it was no big deal. Ava closed her eyes and moved to the fridge getting a glass along the way. She opened it and saw a half a carton of fresh orange juice. She smiled as she realised Mason had gotten the pulp one. She poured herself a glass then offered one to Joy and Mason. They declined and she put it back in the fridge.

“What’s for breakfast?” Ava asked as she headed towards the cupboard.

She saw Mason run his hand through his short brown hair as he said “Whatever you feel like.” Ava nodded and headed to the pantry. She opened it and stared at the shelves of food. After a few minutes and nothing jumping out, Ava closed the pantry door and went to sit at the stools surrounding the island bench.

“What did you guys have?” Ava asked when she couldn’t decide what to make.

She saw Mason glance at the fry pan before he said “Bacon and eggs.” Ava nodded then moved to clean the fry pan. When it was clean she got out the bacon and eggs.

After a quick breakfast Ava asked “Where’s Matt? I though he would’ve smelled the food.”

Mason placed a cup of coffee in front of her and said “He left early, had something to do at work.” Ava nodded; glad she didn’t have to face him after last night. The memory of him standing between her legs, kissing her made a deep red flush crawl up her neck to her cheeks. Trying to hide it she turned away to refill her orange juice. Standing in the cool air, flowing out of the fridge, Ava felt the flush recede.

“Whatcha got planned for today?” Mason asked as she made her way back to her seat.

Ava considered this before saying “I was gonna stop by and see you today but you’re here… so I don’t need to do that.” Ava said the last part like she was marking off her to do list. After a moment silence and Ava pretending to think of what to do, she said “that’s all I really had planned. So I’m free to catch a killer.” The shared look between Joy and Mason said she could do anything she wanted today, except what she wanted to do.

Before they could say she wasn’t allowed to Ava quickly cut in “chill guys. I was kidding.” Then under her breath she put in a ‘sorta’ to make the statement truer. When Mason shot her a knowing look she just smiled and downed her glass of juice. After rinsing her glass and placing it on the draining board she turned and started out of the room. Before she got to the door she spun to face two of the people she trusted most in the world.

“What’s the plan for today?” she asked. She watched a smile spread across Masons face while Joy shook her head and went to clean the dishes.

“You get an exciting day of sitting here doing nothing.” Mason said around the smile that was only getting bigger. Ava groaned as she turned and headed for her study. Half way there she changed her mind.
