Chapter 5

When they arrived at her apartment Ava could still see broken glass scattered across the parking lot. Ava swallowed and took a deep breath. The memory of watching Matt chase her across the lot as she was taken was still fresh in her mind. She bit her lower lip then stopped knowing that if Matt saw her he'd know she was nervous. After another deep breath Ava pulled off her seat belt and began to get out. Matt grabbed her arm and pulled her back down.

"Wait for my signal, alright?" Matt said. Unable to speak she just nodded. She watched as they all got out and scanned the area. They all met at her door. Matt opened the door and reached in for her. She stepped out and drew in a deep breath trying to settle her nerves. She was closing the door when a big fat drop of water hit the back of her neck and went south. She shivered as the drops came faster. Ava moved towards the back to get her duffle when she saw Mason already had it. The rain that had started moments ago was suddenly belting down on them and they rushed in a tight group towards the porch of Ava building. Ava realised they were surrounding her.

'Cops' she thought with the roll of her eyes. She'd been in the army, Green Beret no less. She knew how to take care of herself. As they entered the lobby Ava felt a shiver run up her spine. Instantly she surveyed the room. With a hesitant swallow she moved towards the stairs. Mason in front led the way to her apartment. She shared this building with other tenants who were hardly ever here, like her. She had the top loft apartment and the lower left one to her, a wooden stair way joining them near the door. The lower two levels were spilt between two couples and an old lady who owned the building. Across the hall was a man who Ava had only seen once, when she moved in four years ago. As they reached her door she stepped in front to open the door. As she slipped the key in she felt a slight tug in the lock. Instantly she let the key go. It hung there in the door.

"What's up?" Matt asked with his head on the swivel.

"Booby trapped." Ava said as she ran her hand along the door frame. She bent down so her eyes were level with the lock. As she looked at the handle and the lock she saw a small string, possibly hair, across the door on the other side. It was wrapped through the lock and came out this side. Now that she saw it she felt stupid for not seeing it before. She followed the wire down the door frame and along the floor till it reached the end of the hall way. It went up and out the window. To an antenna mounted to the wall. Mason stood next to the wall and a smile crept on to his face.

"That's me sorry," he said. When she looked at him with a question on the tip of her tongue he continued "I wanted to know when you were in town, and to make sure no one was squatting when you weren't here." Ava stared at him.

"How come I've never noticed it before?" she asked. Ava expected a blush to creep up his neck but to her surprise his face went dark.

"With everything going on," he started "I forgot to take it down. I usually do it before you get here. Make sure everything's okay."

Ava smiled at her twin and said "that's why my fridge is always full." Mason returned her smile and they walked back to her door. Mason pulled the wire out with a quick tug and his phone beeped. Ava looked at him and he waved her in. she finished unlocking the door then opened it up wide. As soon as she stepped into the room she got another shiver down her spine, only this one came back up as well. Quickly she grabbed her iPhone and quickly tapped open an app she made. Then she went over everything with it. She heard Mason dump the duffle bag next to the door as they all walked in. When she reached the lamp beside the door her phone screamed. She places the phone on the table the started to search the lamp. Next to the bulb she found a small device. A bug. She placed it on the ground and smashed it with the heel of her shoe. In her search she found four others spread around the living room. There were none up stairs.
