Chapter 34

Kayla tugged on a long-sleeved black shirt over her tank top, smoothing the fabric out repeatedly to calm her nerves. Next to her, Troy, Dahlia and Tamarak were also donning their ‘armour’. No one was allowed actual armour in the House of Glamours; they were allowed their weapons and staffs. Arulan had instructed Jared to make them wear identical black clothing that consisted of long-sleeved shirts, stretchy black pants and rubber-soled boots. Both Kayla and Dahlia were allowed black hair ties to pull back their hair from their faces but that was it.

Glancing at the others, she noted that each of them was showing their nerves in their own ways: Tamarak was carefully counting the arrows in his quiver again and again, Troy was chewing his fingernails and Dahlia was repeatedly smoothing her blonde hair back into a ponytail.

“Do you think we have any chance of beating it?” Troy asked Tamarak uneasily as he adjusted one of his boots on his foot.

Tamarak definitely looked nervous, but he looked very grim too, like he had everything to lose if he didn’t succeed. He glanced at Troy, then said, “We have to.”

Troy nodded. “So no pressure, right?” he teased, causing a small smile to flicker across Dahlia’s face.

“There has been a zero percentage success rate,” Jared warned.

“And how many people have tried going through it?” Kayla challenged, hoping to calm Troy and Dahlia’s evident nerves.

Jared frowned at her. “Tristan, Marina, Yasmine and I have tried it before,” he admitted.

“But there was no Magician of Fire,” Troy noted.

Jared raised an eyebrow at him and Kayla realized that he probably didn’t know about the prophecy. Fortunately, a diversion was unknowingly caused by Dahlia when her hair tie snapped from her repeated tying of her hair. The guys jumped.

“Sorry,” Dahlia muttered, picking up the broken hair tie.

“Let me fix it,” Kayla offered, surprising the others.

Kayla stepped behind her, taking another hair tie from the box on the side and sweeping Dahlia’s blonde curls up into a ponytail again. Troy raised an eyebrow at her.

“Who are you and what have you done to Kayla?” Troy teased as Kayla secured Dahlia’s hair firmly away from her face.

Kayla raised a sceptical eyebrow at her brother; Tamarak and Jared laughed. Jared sat down on a bench, stretching his long legs out in front of him, the picture of relaxation; Kayla knew that he would be partly responsible for the horrors that they would face in the House of Glamours.

The five of them were in a side room off from the training arena. After breakfast, Jared had gathered them there for Arulan to give them a briefing before they entered the House of Glamours. None of them had ever been in this room before; it was small, with just enough space for their original clothes and a bench to sit on although none of them but Jared was sitting.
