Chapter 8

“My lord,” a blonde magician called, dragging the limp body of a small child behind him rather impatiently; she was unconscious but he couldn’t be bothered to lift her up properly. “I have found the brat that you requested.”

His tone was just shy of mocking and carefully arranged so that a normal person would not notice the reluctance in his voice. Of course, it was not smart to address the Fire Immortal that way, especially when no one could hide anything from him.

Varmer swivelled around from the balcony in his throne room to look at the magician with cold, empty eyes. A thin smile without a trace of humour curved his lips, making the other magician’s skin crawl although he tried not to betray how scared he felt.

“How… wonderful,” he murmured softly. “Well done, Darius. Did everything go as planned?”

“Yes, my lord,” Darius replied. “I went through the Earth Door like you instructed. She was easy enough to grab; I used the illusion potion and injected her with the power-disabling elixir.”

“Did anyone notice her disappearance?” Varmer questioned, probably testing Darius’s loyalty to him and whether or not he would actually lie to him.

Fortunately for Darius, he answered quite truthfully. “I don’t think so,” he said thoughtfully. “A small boy was with her though. But he was about her age and might not realize that she is gone. The illusion lasted for two hours. So when he finally noticed that she was gone, it was a while after she had been kidnapped.”

“Excellent,” Varmer hissed in a neutral tone; Darius was not at all certain whether he was being sarcastic or not since it could go either way. “Now that we have both her and Ellie, things will be much easier.”

“Why, my lord?” Darius asked tentatively.

Varmer rounded on him with a furious look in his eyes. Biting his bottom lip, Darius immediately took a step backwards; he knew that he had made a blunder.

“Why would I tell you, imbecile?” Varmer demanded, his intimidating aura causing Darius to immediately bow at the waist hastily.

“My most sincere apologies, my lord-” Darius began but Varmer cut off his voice with a sharp retort.

“Send Ellie, Benjamin and Leonardo up here immediately,” he ordered, glaring at the unfortunate magician.

“Of course, my lord,” Darius said, bowing again.

“Why are you still here?” Varmer demanded.

Darius spun around furiously and stalked out of the room, trying not to let any of his annoyance show on his face. Even though Darius made a visible effort not to look frustrated, Varmer could sense the exasperation rolling off him in waves. He watched him go, feeling no remorse for snapping at the other magician. Darius had never fully understood how serious the business of the guard was, which was why he wasn’t in Varmer’s personal protection group; there were only five magicians in it: Ellie, his wife and a shield, Leo, a teleporter, Zara who could manipulate electricity, Tia, a warrior, and Benjamin, a telekinetic. Darius had only joined Varmer’s army fourteen years ago.
