Chapter 20

Troy caught up with Dahlia when they reached the landing of the library. He was not a particularly fast runner but neither was she; he was only able to catch up with her because he was taller than she was and therefore had longer legs. Fortunately she was not a Magician of Air; Magicians of Air like Tamarak and Raven could run very fast and Magicians of Earth like Kayla and Hunter had very good endurance for long distance running.

It was not the first time that they had had arguments about their relationship. Everyone, including the both of them, knew about their feelings for one another, but things kept coming in between them: Kayla’s interference, the possible threat of Varmer using their feelings against one another and now Troy’s promise.

“Dahlia,” Troy began, grabbing her arm to prevent her from running any further. “You can’t run away from your problems.”

Dahlia snorted, spinning to face him and tossing back her long blonde hair. “Yeah, that’s great, coming from you. Just face it head on, right? Isn’t that what you’ve been doing? Being totally honest with me?”

Troy winced, letting go of her arm. She was not often angry but when she was, it wasn’t fun. They hadn’t gotten furious at one another, at least not seriously since they had found out about the magical world. On those rare occasions that she did get very mad, her demeanour was icy and cold, like her aura.

“Okay, okay,” Troy muttered. “Geez, Dahlia, give a guy a break.”

Dahlia raised an eyebrow at him sceptically and crossed her arms over her chest. “Give you a break?” she demanded. “Please, Troy, I’m not an idiot. Obviously whatever promise you made means more to you than I do, either that or you’re using it as a lame excuse to make me break up with you instead of the other way round which is totally not decent!”

“That’s not true!” Troy exclaimed, trying to grab her hand again, but she tugged her arm out of his reach. “I’m not trying to tell you that I’m not interested, I do care about you.”

“Great, so this promise is more important, obviously,” Dahlia retorted. “At least give a girl some respect!”

Troy scowled. “Do you think I enjoy staying away from you so much?” he demanded.

“Oh, I don’t know,” Dahlia sniped back, her voice heavy with sarcasm. “Think hard, Troy. When have you ever given me any indication that you like spending time with me? We’ve spent most of our time together fighting for our lives!”

“Oh, do you think that I kiss just any girl on their birthday?” Troy shot back, before he could bite his tongue. Dahlia took a step back, surprise featured all over her face. They hadn’t talked about the kiss that had happened on Dahlia’s birthday about a month previously.

“You never mentioned it,” Dahlia said shakily, but her voice was uncertain and uneasy.

Troy hesitated, unsure of what to say now that he had forced her on the defensive. Biting her lip, she turned aside and leaned over the balcony railing, playing with the silver charm bracelet that she still wore on her right wrist. Troy had given it to her for her fourteenth birthday and she had worn it every day since, even during the Battle for Avalon. The silver charms glittered in the light.
