Chapter 12
“Kayla said that Jenna’s a runaway from Varmer’s castle like Troy and Helen,” Dahlia spoke up, trying to save Kayla from the awkwardness of the situation, even though she wanted to know who Jenna was as much as Arulan did.
Arulan’s bushy grey eyebrows rose up on his forehead until they were almost lost in his long grey hair. “That’s impossible,” Arulan stated. “Kayla, why did you lie? You know as well as I do that you only rescued Troy and Helen from Varmer’s castle.”
“Why did you lie to us?” Troy demanded at the same time as Dahlia asked, “How did you know, Arulan?”
Kayla clenched her fists and glared at Arulan. She was rapidly losing her temper at all the information that Troy and Dahlia were slowly weaning out of Sapphire, Tamarak, Arulan and herself. Before she could respond, Tamarak changed the subject subtly, trying to spare Kayla some pressure.
“Don’t you remember that day, Troy?” Tamarak asked curiously. “You were seven at the time; that’s definitely old enough to remember what happened.”
Troy scowled slightly. “Romulus took my memories, remember? And even when he returned them, they didn’t settle in properly for a long time or feel natural to recall the events. Even now they come in flashes sometimes.”
Kayla shot Tamarak a grateful look for his intervention and changed the subject before Troy or Dahlia could remember the questions that they had asked previously.
“Arulan, I have to save Jenna,” she insisted. “While I’m at it, I can see if I can rescue the other Immortals at the same time: Rosalie, Niccolo and Edith. They’re your aunts and uncle. You have to want them rescued-”
She cut herself off before she could say anything else. It was an awkward halt in the conversation, but Arulan sighed, filling in the silence. He stood up and walked over to the window. Kayla held her breath as he stared out the window at the grounds of the Elemental Academy, still covered in blood, bodies and weapons.
“Even if I so wanted to let you leave, you cannot,” Arulan said simply. “The last time someone convinced me to let them leave, two people died because of her actions.”
Kayla lost her grip on her temper before she had realized it. “My reasons for going to Varmer’s castle are valid!” she shouted. “That other magician didn’t have as good reasons as mine! You don’t understand!”
Arulan raised a sceptical eyebrow at Kayla. “How can I understand something if you don’t tell me everything, Kayla? You never tell anyone everything; I doubt there is a soul alive on the planet who could tell me every hidden secret, every twisted truth, apart from you. If you didn’t constantly lie to me and try to pull the wool over my eyes, I might be more inclined to let you go.”
“You can stop me,” challenged Kayla, playing a bluff. “You know as well as I do that if I want to leave, you can’t stop me.”
“Liar,” Arulan responded, without any flare of his temper which was unusual for a Magician of Fire. “I couldn’t stop Troy or Dahlia if they wanted to leave, yes. But you have no power that’ll enable you to get past the shield without them. Dahlia could charm Jared into lowering the shield and Troy could get them out of there. But you can’t.”
