Chapter 40
Kayla, Dahlia and Sapphire weaved their way through the crowds of magicians and Moon Children, trying to find the guys. Luna had reserved a small section of the crowd for them, so that they would be somewhere near the front, where she could see them and they could give moral support as well as influence the crowd to appreciate Luna more.
It seemed like the entire population of the island were at Luna’s coronation. They had agreed to meet the guys at the reserved area, but it took a while for all three of them to realize that none of them knew exactly where it was.
“Where are they supposed to be?” Kayla finally asked, looking at Sapphire.
She looked somewhat chagrined. “Uh, I’m not exactly sure,” she admitted. “We were supposed to meet them here, but I don’t see them anywhere.”
Kayla rolled her eyes. “Great…”
“Looking for us?” Hunter asked playfully, tugging at Kayla’s dark hair in amusement. “Why are you dressed like a girl today?”
His flirtatious tone irked Kayla no end and she snapped a response before she realized what she was saying. “Are you saying I normally look like a man?”
Hunter was taken aback by her sharp tone. She normally wasn’t so rude or brusque even when impatient. Fortunately for him, the other guys, Tamarak, Troy and Cedric, appeared at his shoulder to catch the girls’ attention.
“Wow, Troy, a white suit,” Dahlia giggled. “It looks like vanilla ice cream.”
“I think they look more like penguins,” Sapphire mused, snickering.
“Oh, sure, laugh at the guys,” Troy shot back.
All four guys were wearing white suits without an inch of colour on them either. It didn’t look so bad on the Moon Children, but on the guys, they looked like waiters.
“I feel like a waiter,” Cedric confided, tugging at the white lapels of his jacket, making Dahlia and Sapphire laugh.
“At least he can take a joke,” Sapphire teased, shooting a teasing look at Troy.
Suddenly Kayla couldn’t take it anymore. The animosity was so obvious; Sapphire and Tamarak could barely look at each other. Troy and Cedric were hardly talking and Dahlia was finding it difficult to speak to either one of them for fear of hurting the others’ feelings. As it was, they were all talking around one another.
“Come on,” she grumbled, folding her arms across her chest. “Let’s go and find Luna’s reserved area.”
She stalked off; the others quickly followed with Hunter muttering in a low voice, “What got her goat?”
She ignored him, irritation overwhelming everything. A Moon Child suddenly tugged at her elbow. Kayla jerked her elbow out of her grasp, but the woman dodged her retaliating strike.
