Every ounce of excitement that was built up inside you vanished the instant he asked his question. It was odd that you were feeling this way. You don't know what you were expecting him to say, but this clearly wasn't it.
The disappointment you felt was great. In fact, it was enough to fill the void that the excitement had left behind, but he couldn't tell what you were feeling. Your helmet hid every emotion you felt. Without it, they could be easily read just by looking into your eyes.
Before you could answer him, the restless shuffling inside your satchel along with small whines answered for you.
"You brought him with you?!" he exclaimed.
"Well, there aren't many reliable around babysitters around here." you said with pure sarcasm.
The child flipped the flap of the satchel over and his eyes instantly lit up once he saw his his Mandalorian. He cooed excitedly, reaching his tiny, grabby fingers out to him, wanting to be held. The Mandalorian sighed softly at the child as if he was relieved to see that the child was okay. He allowed the child to grab ahold of his index finger for an affectionate touch, but instead the child took it to use it as a teething tool.
You're not sure if your ears were deceiving you, but you were sure that you heard a quiet chuckle from under Mando's helmet.
The bond between them seemed to be close. The child clearly didn't see the Mandalorian as a threat and the Mandalorian didn't appear to be interested in harming the child as you had initially thought. This was a surprise for you, but it also made you put what you were taught into further questioning.
Unfortunately the sweet moment was ruined when the guard who had lead you to the prison came running in, panicked. "Valkrien!" she called in a shouted whisper.
The Mandalorian was quick to react to her unexpected drop by. Right away he protectively stepped in front of you, shielding both you and the child from the potential threat who stood in the door.
"Stay back!" he warned, resting his hand on his side only to be reminded that his blaster was ripped from him during his capture.
"Whoa, wait!" you placed a hand on his shoulder, but he didn't dare to break his stare off the guard. "She helped bust me in. She's cool."
The look on the guard's face changed at your complement. She smiled, but with a loud bang echoing from the hall, her panicked state returned.
"You have to get moving!" she stressed. With another bang that was loud enough to made the bits and pieces of stone to shake off the stone walls, no explanation from the guard was needed. It was time to go.
The guard lead the way as the three of you booked it down the hall, but quickly fell behind when the wound you left on her leg slowed her down tremendously. Without hesitation you slowed your pace to let her wrap her one arm around your neck for support.
"Where's the exit?" Mando panted as he ran along side you.
"There!" The secret tunnel lied just ahead.
For a moment you were starting to believe that you were actually going to pull this rescue mission off, but much like the wall beside you, your hope was destroyed. Obliterated by the very same blind beast you had encountered earlier. The beast was horrifyingly quick when he came barging in, and for whatever reason he directly chose you as his target. You didn't see him coming, the dust from the walls clouded the air around you. All you felt was his fist wrap around your neck and your back being pressed onto the wall. The force of being slammed into the wall knocked the blaster out of your hand, and right after it fell, you heard a very concerning crunch from under the beast's toes.
