The Politician

"Names Sam Duncan, Mayor for three terms" I said fixing my tie. "The people love me. I had a press conference early that morning. Had to talk about expenses and the new park project. Stuff you wouldn't understand Detective."

"Excuse me! Just get to the point. What happened in Mr. Gunn's office? Why where you there?" said the Detective shifting in his chair.

Nicolas and I go back a long way. We both knew each other and he has always been a big promoter of my campaign and I refer him as an excellent lawyer. I went into the firm that morning, earlier than my appointment with Nicolas. I had a lot going on and needed to see him.

Yes, I barged into his office unannounced. I cannot hide this fact. When I entered his office we talked about money of course. He wanted to support my campaign with twenty five thousand dollars. I couldn't allow him to do that, no matter how generous it was.

"Is this what produced the argument?" asked Chevalier.

I told him I can't take that kind of money, even if it's for my campaign. My poker face only worked on certain people, I hoped it worked on this detective.

"You have to take it," said Mr. Gunn. "I want you to have it."

"How many times do I have to tell you that you do so much for me. Thank you. I appreciate this so much." I said as he had wrote out the check. It was strictly business. Not much to it.

I then proceeded to leave as he told me of his promotion and this big party he was planning. I said, "Count me in, I will be there."

I couldn't tell the detective that the money wasn't for me, but for Mr. Gunn. That I have been blackmailed this whole time and I'm as corrupt as they come. Nicolas wasn't any better. I did take matters in my own hands. Well I would have. I left that law firm trying to figure out a way to stop this whole situation.

I went home and got ready for another press conference and to sign some papers. That's the life of a politician. So many papers flow through my hands its crazy to keep up with it all. That's what I told him.

"Lets fast forward to before your arrival to the party." the detective objected.

"Yes, arrived at six. First one there. You know early bird get the worm. I'm always early to everything." I answered honestly. I left out the part of exploring the camp, including the building  Mr. Gunn was found dead in.

"I see this would have given you the perfect opportunity to kill him."

"The doctor, Debbie and Donald, that artist and teacher, where all there early also." I replied.

"Yes, I agree, though you where the only one no one had seen until the party starts." Detective Chevalier said.

"You think I killed him." I said in outrage.

"I'm not implying anything. But I don't think Nicolas paid you that twenty five thousand dollars. I think He was blackmailing you." answered the Detective.

"Wait, what, that's ridiculous." I state in my defense. Knowing every word is true.

"I looked into your records and you have no money, no sponsors. Mr. Gunn had never given you any money. That evening he had deposited twenty five thousand into an off shore account." he said looking directly into my eyes.

"Okay, yes he was blackmailing me. I'm not the greatest Mayor and I've done things I should have never done. But, I didn't kill him." I said.

"I understand." he said.

All I could do was hang my head in shame. I was found out once again. This Detective had seen through my cunning and sly rouse. Which I wasn't very sly or cunning at all. I would have killed Nicolas if I had the opportunity which I didn't.

"Did you leave the party at any point?" he continued.

"I did around 8:15pm" I said under my breath. "I needed some air. It was getting to stuffy in the dining room. The Artist and Doctor smoking that is."

"You say that the Artist was smoking inside?" he asked.

"Yeah, why?" I said.

"Nothing, continue." he motioned.

I saw someone leave the dining room around ten to grab their jacket from their car. It was a woman. She grabbed her coat and happily made her way back to the party. I couldn't see who it was because it was too dark. Other than that I didn't see anyone or anything else. I was drunk that's why. I was drinking my cares away.

I stumbled into the boat house and had seen Mr. Gunn's lifeless body lying there. I had seen that his wallet had been opened and there was no money left in it. I managed not to touch anything else and made my way back outside the building. I looked around making sure no one had seen me. So many thoughts had entered into my head. Joy, that I was not going to be blackmailed anymore. Fear, that I actually was the one who killed him. And pure guilt that I wasn't going to say a word about this to no one. Making my way back to the cabin I passed the Captain. He had been the one who helped me because I couldn't make it myself. I noticed a shovel in his left hand. It didn't hit me till morning when I woke up and heard the news that Nicolas was truly dead. I thought it was all a bad dream. It was not. It was not at all.

"I stumbled back to my cabin and fell asleep." I said.

"Thank you that is all." he said.

"I didn't kill him," I said one last time as I got up from the chair and started to walk out. "Everyone here had something against Nicolas. Any one of them could have killed him. Any one of them Detective Chevalier."

"Thank you Mr. Duncan. I'm taking that in consideration." he said as I walked out of the dining hall.
