The Bookkeeper

I woke up around five and fed my cats. I have ten lovely little baby's. There names are Smokey, Moon-pie, Obadiah, Captain, Fluffy, Lily, Tiger, Remy, Jake, and Buttercup. They all have there own little quirks and I love them so much. I love cats and books. Living in a tiny apartment though doesn't help with having to keep up on my chores.

I'm an early riser. I love waking up and watching the sunrise and spending time with my kitties. That is the only thing that keeps me going through the day. I'm not happy where I'm at, not at all. My parents always said I could make a life out of singing with my beautiful voice, instead I work at a law firm as a secretary. Well my official job title is bookkeeper. My dream job is to be a librarian. The problem is that job does not pay well.

My apartment is really close to the firm so, most of the time I walk to work. I grab my bag, head out the door, and down the street. I pass a few gorgeous flowers on the way and bend down to smell them. Oh, how I would love to have a garden. I'm not much of a gardener though, everything would probably die.

I get into the building which is empty and dark, so I turn on the lights. I walk into the break room and start a pot of coffee. Today Mr. Gunn was to receive a very important promotion which he has worked really hard for. I'm not jealous, no... Well maybe a bit. It's just that he has everything and now he is getting more money.

It was time things changed and I knew how much Donald hated Nicolas also, so I worked it out that we would kill him. It was Donald's idea to steal his gun and use it against him. I thought it would be much easier to just use poison. But either way I was ready to get rid of him. If I can't have a life like his, then I don't want him to have it either.

Everyone soon arrived and we started the day off as it normally went other than coming in early and the big promotion announcement. I filed papers away and answered a few phone calls.

A flustered Mr. Duncan came in to the firm and  went straight to Nicolas's office.

"Sorry Mr. Gunn!" I said trying to make it like I tried my best to stop the Mayor. "I told him to wait, but he insisted on barging in."

"It's fine Miss Flowers. I can take it from here. Everything is okay." He answered.

"Okay Mr. Gunn, I'll make sure no one bothers you while you speak with Mr. Duncan." I said returning to my books.

At least that is what Nicolas thought. I actually stayed and listened through the door trying to make out what they were saying. Something about money was mentioned I think twenty three thousand dollars. Maybe, he was donating money towards his campaign for office. I didn't want it to be too obvious, so I returned to my desk and talked with Donald for a few minutes.

After Mayor Duncan left, Isabelle Harris came through the door and I sent her right in. I went to school at State View High, when I was younger of course. I reviewed some papers and placed them in the filing cabinet in alphabetical order. My Aunt let me borrow a new book series called If I Run by Terri Blackstock and I was already on the last book. I sat there and read a few chapters as the time passed by. Nothing really gets done here.

"Hey, Debbie, before you leave can you put these away?" said Mr. Gunn exiting his office with a stack of papers in his hand.

"I can do that, as long as you wake up sleepy Joe over there." I retorted. I couldn't help but to laugh hearing Donald snore, he is just a big teddy bear. A big some times grumpy teddy bear.

Both Donald and I were invited to Camp Jungle Woods to Nicolas Gunn's party he was holding.

This was the perfect opportunity to kill him. I spoke with Donald for about a half an hour, going over our plan. He was going to break into Gunn's house and steal his gun. We would shoot him then disperse his body into the lake nearby. No one would find the body and if they did, we would be miles away. It wasn't the best thought out plan, but it was good enough to get by.

"You may have been jealous enough to kill him, could you not?" asked the Detective rising from his seat.

"No, I would never! Just because I didn't like him doesn't mean I would kill him!" I replied.

"Funny, that is exactly what Donald Brunson said," emphasized Detective Chevalier.

"I do my job and I'm surviving on pretty much nothing. Nicolas is the one who hired me knowing I was a hard worker. I wouldn't have anything if it wasn't for him." I said trying to deceive him.

"Yet, you are jealous of him," he said pouring himself a glass of water. "So, where did you go after work?"

"I went to my Aunts to return her books that I had finished reading. I was there all night. She made spaghetti and meatballs with her world's famous garlic bread. She somehow gets it so the crust around it is still soft like the center. When dinner was done we watched television," I explained. "My Aunt always tries to set me up with men that she meets at the grocery store. She invited one over that evening and I had to tell her to let him know I already had someone. That someone is Donald Brunson of course. Did you know he is planning on proposing to me? Don't tell him that I know, that would crush the surprise."

"Can your Aunt verify you where there all night?" I asked.

"Yes, I was there till nine then went home, fed my cats, then went to bed. What does the night before have to do with his murder?"

"Nothing, just wanting to get the full perspective of events," said Detective Chevalier. "Go on."

I didn't tell him everything. I couldn't. One thing was, I got a phone call from Donald that he had gone over to Nicolas's house, and wasn't able to steal his gun. He told me that someone had the same idea to break into the house. I told him I could mix up some poison and we could still do this, but he told me no, that we will figure something else out.

So I woke up the same time I did the morning before and Tiger was lying on my stomach. I pushed him off and got up out of bed. I decided to go to the store and buy a new outfit for the party. Walking to the store I ran into an old friend from High School. We talked for a bit then we went on our way.

I bought a really cute 1985 vintage red and yellow patterned scarf. Going home I also stopped and picked up some kitty litter cause I was running low. When I finally got home I took a shower, and put on make up. Sitting down on the sofa, Fluffy jumped up on my lap. He sat there for a few minutes until Buttercup came up and scared him. He jumped straight up in the air and one of his claws was attached to the dress I was wearing and tore it.

The door bell rang and it was Donald. I told him what happened and he comforted me by telling me he could patch it up.

We left about five minutes later and drove to Camp Jungle Woods. I've never been to this camp before, But I heard it's beautiful. We got there and talked with several of the other guests. Okay, Donald didn't really, but I did.

Other than that I went to bed around 10:19pm. I remember seeing Mrs. Harris grabbing a jacket out of the car, you know the teacher.

"Thank you for you cooperation Mrs. Flowers." said the Detective.

"If you need anything else just let me know." I replied hoping he wouldn't.

"You are free to go back to your cabin and be careful the fog is getting worse." he said.

"I will, thank you." I said leaving.
