CHAPTER SIXTEEN

     "Cordelia?" Desiree repeated.

The laundry list of bizarre things that had been occurring in her life were becoming increasingly longer by the second. Case in point, the female from her vision named Cordelia, who would every so often cast an eye in Desiree's direction, and then, quickly turn away every time Desiree made eye contact with her, had taken upon herself to attend the party much to her internal dismay. Was she some sort of spy masquerading as a teenager? Who was she working for?

She was fully aware that the aforementioned in question wasn't entirely human.  To her, that much was for certain, considering the fact that in her vision the female imposter was in the her normal guise as an elf. On top of that, Desiree had a feeling that the other worldly humanoid had to be much older than she appeared to be too boot. All the same, she needed to know the truth, to understand the reason for Cordelia being there in the first place.  If I didn't know any better I think I have my own genuine starker, she thought.

In any event, Desiree had made up her mind. It was time to pay Cordelia a little visit. She was on the verge of going over and confronting the very person that was masquerading as a human girl when she received a tap on her shoulder, superseded immediately by a recognizable voice.

"Desiree?" Desiree jerked back at the sound of her name.

"Huh, what?" she said, spinning around to come face to face with the pale visage of Anthony. He was accompanied by another teenage male. The instant she noticed him, the hummingbird brand upon her right hand started to give her trouble as she experienced a throbbing sensation. Immediately, she placed both her hands behind her, trying her utmost to ignore the dull pain that it was causing.

"Let me introduce to you the host of the party. Desiree this is Kyle. Kyle Quartermaine.," Anthony said.

     Desiree nodded.

The boy named Kyle Quartermaine was a 17-year-old boy with gray eyes, an olive complexion, and wavy blond hair worn loose about the shoulders. He was tall and, fairly muscular. Known for being a prankster, Kyle was the basketball team's best player, with aspirations of going pro and was in the eleventh grade.  Of course, Desiree had seen him a few times in passing, and yet they had never spoke to each other.

"It's a pleasure to meet you." he said, extending a hand out to Desiree. "I've seen you around school. Ant, you never told me how beautiful she looks in person."

Desiree felt a hint of embarrassment. She was tongue-tied.

Hesitant at first, Desiree shook the young man's hand. The moment she done this the hummingbird birthmark etched in the palm of her right hand had intensified in pain even more as though someone was stabbing her limb with a dozen knives. She gritted her teeth to hold back the urge to scream. Desiree quickly place her hands behind her back yet again, pretending as if nothing was wrong. She offered up a fake smile as if nothing was wrong whatsoever.  At the same time, she got a glimpse of Kyle's body posture perked up at the sight of the necklace around her neck.
