Chapter 6: Moving
‘You think you can manipulate every single person you see in this place?’
‘No....I’
‘Well stay away from Alex Smith you f*cking sl*t! Nobody ever liked anyway. They felt pity on you since you came into their lives and you had no place to go. Your ugly and nobody will love you’
‘You’re wrong,’
‘You punched me you b*tch! Now let’s give you one too!’
“Ah!” I screamed as I flung straight up from my previous posture. My heartbeat kept its quick pace as I slapped my hand onto my forehead. I was sweating. It felt surreal. Looking around, I realised I was in my bedroom again.
It was then my pulse seemed to gradually decrease from speed.
“Another nightmare,” I sighed in relief and used my left hand to grab my phone on my bedside table. The nightmares were constantly tormenting me for the past weeks since the others (Smith, Trott and Sam) had moved out of the old place. Ross and I had decided to move today to our new flats. Though, I swore that this nightmare was worse than the previous one.
Getting up quickly from the look of time, I walked into the bathroom and started freshening myself for the big day. Luckily we didn’t have to worry about work since Lewis gave us the day off.
Ten minutes past and I hopped downstairs to discover Ross giving me a mug of coffee from the table – with a warm smile on his face. I tried to copy his mood, yet all I found was my mouth barely moving up for a grin. My head pounded like hell and there was no way I had the energy to even plaster an emotion on me.
Sitting down on the table, I sipped my coffee quickly alone; until Ross had sat down with me to join the quietness.
“So, we’re moving today,” Ross broke the silence.
I muttered, “Yeah, it’s going to be chaos having the other Hat boys helping us.”
He laughed and a slowly form a smile. Ross was friendly and loose, and since the incidence of the ‘date’: we felt as if we weren’t going to cause a wall of awkwardness around us.
“It’s not just Smith, Trott, Kate and Sam going,” Ross took a sip after he spoke.
“Who then?” I asked.
“Marcus, Minty, Christelle, George and probably Kim if I can ask her quickly,” Ross counted out as I gulped the last drop of hot beverage from the mug.
“That’s awesome!” I replied, “I mean...I miss having the others around.”
“Well... you haven’t been social lately,” Ross tailed and I finally remind myself what has happened throughout before. “You’ve been either at the office: editing obviously. And then you just come home, shutting me out as if you’re freakin’ Elsa.”
“I’m sorry really,” I sighed – eyeing him with sympathy. “It’s just that I’ve been really down and works gone so hard and...”
Ross interrupted and raised an eyebrow. He said, “I don’t really believe you of the reason of being anti-social these past few weeks. You’re not posting anything on your social Medias at all. Is there something else you would like to confess?” There was guilt building up, and I feel my head sweating. His eyes peer into mine; not with suspicions. My head begins to lose control with not enough blood carrying through.
The whole room began to spin... or is that my eyesight.
I stutter quickly and started scrambling up from my chair, “I’m just going to bathroom for a second, give me one moment for that answer.” Tugging my long sleeves, I quickly yet failed to rush upstairs.
Everything was spinning, all in blur. My leg unsuccessfully held me up as I held my arms to a nearby table. In all of earth, something – glass – shattered and I hear someone coming. My eyes also fail and I fell into nothing.
The next thing I knew, my eyes powered to open, I quickly scrambled up and saw traces of human silhouettes. They all had one thing in common, they were looking at me. I dared not to look but listen to their mutters.
“Okay Hornby, what did you do to my sister?!”
“Nothing! She just fainted before she got up the stairs.”
“Marcus, he probably just saw her faint on the floor.”
“There was bloody broken glass on the bloody floor! How am I not suspicious?”
“I’m telling the truth! Steph just fainted!”
“Well explain to me Ross: how did she get scars on her arm?”I finally recognise my brother’s voice as I groan from my posture.
I heard gasps whilst I got up with a very horrible back ache. When I saw their faces, all had different emotions. There were at least 5 people in the room; excluding me. My eyebrows cringe as I feel the hard grasp of my brother’s arms.
How did Minty manage his hugs?
“Get off Marc,” I said slowly and he quickly backs away. I see their mouths about to ask ‘if I was alright’, but I pause and got up. I had to dodge their questions. They don’t want to hear any of my answers truly. Instead, I pretended to be positive and picked up one box: one with my personal stuff.
“Well? Come on! We haven’t got all day,” I said and everyone slowly followed my instructions.
I couldn’t wait to live at my own very flat, this had meant I didn’t have to be weary around people often, and especially wanted to tell them my... secret. Anyways, Trott, Kate, Smith and Sam came along after the incident, having no clue on what happened. In my opinion, I hoped they didn’t know. Ross and my brother were the only ones hazy about it.
However, I stocked up the last minute belongings in the back of Christelle car booth as George helped Christelle get the other stuff before we drove off. Whenever, I look at the two together, you would never guess that they were together. As I remembered, she had told me her relationship to George was ‘not intended’.
“We never loved each other. It was more of ‘friends with benefits’.”
Laughing at the thought, I shake my head and closed the back. All of us decided to split up and help either Ross or I on unpacking. On my team – I guess – I had: Christelle, George, Marcus and Kim and Sam.
“Oh dear...” Christelle spoke with a posh tone quietly to me, “It appears that we have the ‘unkindly woman’ on our moving team.”Grasping my mouth, I force myself not to laugh.
It came out as a cough and whispered back, “I’m afraid so Miss Whites.” She walks towards the car with a weird style and laughed along the way. She is such a comedian.
“Oiy! Come on Rees and Whites: get a move on!” Kim shouted from her car and we both jogged through the freezing streets of Bristol. The car had been too full; means we had to walk to my new flat. It luckily just five minutes away before I saw the three storey complex building in front of me. My mind finds the disgust of Sam’s face behind me as we found George and Marc unpacking the boxes.
Box and box we carried, we finally finished and I felt my body relax for a moment, until I heard Kim’s voice echo from the new empty room.
“Hey Steph, do you want me to unpack this box?” I flip around to find her with a box which made me tense.
“Uhhh,” I stuttered, “Um no, I’ll do it thank you.” Walking up to the small woman, I quickly but nicely took the box and hid it where no one will ever know.
